It has been quite a winter, just 2" shy of 14' of snow. Well its over wt restrictions have been off for a couple of weeks and things have improved a lot. Just in from the shed getting gear ready for the morning. Man maybe I need meds, when blowing crap from your saws and listening to cbc makes you happy its time ????? :D
Just wanted to contribute so here are a couple pics from the woodlot.

Nice pics Sir! Good lookin' vittles also!!
Very cool. Is that typical terrain up your way?
You didn't run over that saw did ya? Looked bad from the pic.
The garden has been keeping me busy. I'm a itching to get the chainsaw in my hands.
I liked em all, but the last one was my favorite. ;D
Love the pic's, what is that escape ladder on the skidder for? nice the red soil and good looking snacks on the grill.. Busy down here planting and doing cordwood.

I didn't like that yellow birch barber chair :o I assume you're alright since you're posting and still cutting :)
Thank you CCC4, speakin of vittles, after watching your last video you best slow down and have yourself some cause winter will be here in 165 days. "just sayin" :D Here is a pic for you, I think the tears made some of em rust.
Well CTF I guess it is typical for me, with respect to cover type and slope. There are some more pics in my gallery. I do not seem to have a camera icon but you can get there via user gallery. :)
White Pine 2 no saws were injured in the making of the pics, well at least not this time. :D I usually place one of the twins in the pic to give a bit of a size perspective.
Cfarm time for some more rockin photos. :)
Wmfritz, wanted to have a pic of some spring crustations, but the water temps are to cold for the lobster to travel. Those yellow birch logs at the landing will be bartered for said lobsters asap.
David L those tractors had a steel seat that would keep your butt froze all summer. brrrrrr... Got to get some maintenance done soon, a pic of my ol hoss ended ended up on the "wall of shame" last week.
Celliott that birch was a "barber" from the get go. Thought it was a good pic as an example for someone to see one that had not. The smaller dia reduces cut options. It had a bad lean to the right from the wind, plus it was a birch, plus growing out into a hole in the canopy created by a large deadfall. I have see barbers that resulted from to small a notch to accomodiate the tree dia. as well. :) I get the sense that safety is a priority for you as well. Go easy.
I did saw off a stump today. And dug rocks. As my FIL says,I could find something better to do than dig rocks. No sense in telling him I get sick of mowing around 50 rocks and then forgetting where some are or have always made it over it in the past and then hitting the mower on it. ::)
Your winch has a rather sinister looking sidekick.
Nicknamed Cassius, by chance?
I really enjoyed the pictures, not much of that goes on in my neighborhood, but I do have a question, all the equiptment looks right but around here the boats are usually in the water? :D
Thanks Stephen. Is that your big dozer? I could sure use one that size for a few days. Looks dry there.
should have bore cut the birch. is that skidder an o;d cat? like the pusher on the arch our tj has something similar not quite as long
David L put that ladder on last winter. The winter apparel added to the "in and out" .Figured in those conditions that was where an incident could happen. With the understory I still prefer the visual from the cab. :)
Cfarm, you should be planting a tree adjacent to every rock, when your mowing you will know where the rocks are and from your discription of your land you would have one heck of a forest in no time. ;D
NRE, that side kick has a name for sure but if I were to share it "you should know better" would be all you would see. :D
Sandhills those ol boats will get a proper send off this fall. It will involve something call a "24" and a bunch of lads telling stories with one holding a burnt match. Some end up as what could only be described as a "bilge barge" say no more.
Not my dozer Ken :'( Hope your recover is coming along, you should have an easy time finding someone to play golf with, partners not so much. :D
TJ240 its an ol Tree Farmer. Lowered the arch to try and give it a lower profile " look". The black paint was an effort to help hide her at night. The pusher was motivated by a post by Offthebeaten path and inspired by unhooker. Works great it was 3'6" ibeam. Also gives a great place to stand while attaching to a tree.
Stephen,I planted a bird house around some of the rocks. Have to mow around the rock, might just as well have a bird house there too.
Need some extra work ;D. Rent a compressor an jackhammer and knock to tops off. This where I decided doing homeowner tree work wasn't for me >:( .
Ahh I love your pictures stephen and that's my favorite bbq sauce too. The ol doll is looking fine as always. Are you sure there isn't any newfie in you cause your pretty ingenious in your ways? I was hoping to get over to PEI this summer and do a bit of sightseeing but not sure if I can talk the wife into it. Keep the pics comming my friend. 8)
September and early October is the best time ,IMO, water is warm, jellyfish gone and harvest is on. Be sure and tell your wife to pack some overalls and not to worry about bringing handcleaner we got lots. Talking her into coming should be a walk on the beech, after all ya talked her into marring you. :D :D

Thought I should mention that I am curantly working two jobs. Hang in there Autocar it will come and you will be looking for a break. One job is for a farmer with a lot of multiple stems.
Just can't say enough about how great the tree pusher has been.
The other job is clearing for a pit. These pics are from up top.

It all goes for firewood. One customer puts windows in the rows for better air circulation.
Have always wanted to post a nice wildlife pic, well missed my chance this am. What an awesome toad. Guess I will have to go with what I got. This is a local chapter of the FF. Hanging out on top of the the wood shear used for firewood. They are Shearman, Braceyourself,Headsup, Hydraulic68. Oh and the one that appears to be talking while the other listen is still to be named. ??? :D :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/h40.jpg)
A small job I'm doing,3 acre wildlife clear cut.I'm leaving apple-oak-cherry-smooth bark hickory,and a couple white birch.
First picture is of work done.
Second is the pile.
Third is a picture of work yet to be done.
hope this worked, been awhile since I tried pictures.
Yup they came through just fine Ed. Nice looking work. What will u do with the slash?
Brush piles are along the edge of the cut and have to stay. The land owner has to wait 10 yrs then brush mow it again. It's mostly for song bird habitat.
Very cool. U can't leave slash piles in Maine anymore. Maybe if it is a special situation like this u can.
Some good photos of tree length logging.
Nice pics Ed, surprising how flat your ground is. I know you work a bit of construction, thought of you when a storm called Arthur blew through here the other day. I guess its a lot like working in the woods in some respects. Got to pay attention to wind speed and direction. I just tell folks trying to find my place to turn left at the "portapottie" :D :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/Arthur.jpg)
Been some discussion on landing lay out, I try to get out of everybody's way then have it so vehicles point north so the cabs do not to take the direct sun all day.
Put the loader in the middle so I can boost if need be then pull in on one side and load on the other. nice to be able to have it so any branches can be shoved into the woods on the next twitch.
This is a twitch of mixed hardwood. :)
Stephen, Kinda wish i'd bought a tractor your size,60 hp just isn't enough ;D .We didn't get much outa Arthur. Are you clearing for a mining op? Gold?
How do you put fotos on?
Click on the gallery upper right of page. Then create a my gallery, I named mine to make it work. There is an upload photo button. Once the photo is uploaded to your gallery, if you click on it it brings up a screen that shows the photo. Scroll down to insert photo in post. Simple easy. BTW welcome to the forum.
Thanks! I'll give it a try.. I'm not to computer smart :)
Ed not " gold" but " sorta gold". The lads do call it the "money Pit" . :D The over burden is removed the "quality shale " is removed for roads ,drain fields etc. The over burden is then returned. The bigger the gear the easier and deeper the contractors can dig. Gets pretty dusty especially on those days ya have to dump your drinking water in the rad. ;D

Welcome to the forum Valisa. Once you get started posting pictures gets easier. Look forward to seeing forestry in your part of the world. :)
Stephen, what do you use the digger shanks on your skidder blade for? Do you flip them for brush raking?
They are what I call my "all stop". At first they were mounted on the outside of the blade but tended to scarf trees so now they are under the blade.
They worked so well I mounted a set on the farm tractor as well. It is just a push blade made out of an ol bumper off a truck.
Ground clearance is the issue for the farm tractor. In this pic of the mound and pit terrain under hardwood stands the "ol Doll" just barely waddled over the stump. The Helmit is all I had for size reference. Oh and it is not on my head. :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/h51.jpg)
Wow... I thought you fell in a hole !! ;D
While we wait for Valisa to post some pics , thought I might as well post one. I do a small stump to stove fresh mixed hardwood firewood thing. The routine is to build a mixed twitch as the wood is delivered same day.

As always, I like seeing the way you do things in the real northeast... How do you like that conical wedge Stephen?
I have never seen a wedge like that. The only thing I have seen that looked like that was attached to a rear wheel of a car and someone was splitting wood with it. And it was much bigger.
Well in fairness to the makers I have not used it very much. Just part of the wedge kit.
My opinion would be akin to a book review written by someone who has just glanced at the cover. :D I like to keep stumps low so to use it puts you on your knees up close and personal with "soon to be stump". It does take some torque on a big hardwood. To its credit it does not backout nor is there any flying shards like a frozen wedge being smacked.
On another note starting to see salt spray damage in the stand from storm Arthur.
Man, it sure has been dry and dusty. Do enjoy everyones job pics. Stay safe. :)
Most of you folks have probably seen this style of chain but new to me. Made by stihl for huskie saw. Dimpled to carry oil in rail and only one raker. Seem to work well.
Bit of a change in the wind says I, so time to deal with tire issues. Thought I would give this a try and let you know how it goes. "jinx jinx double jinx hex be gone turn around...spit". :D Not much around for used skidder tires but lots of farm tractors. Put two used farm tractor tires 8 ply only half of forestry special ,but 200 each. Put then up front to make changing easy if necessary, then slapped on the winter jewelery.
We shall see....
Nice pics. 8 may last a bit with the chains helping to protect. 8 is better than four. :-)
Sounds like a good deal on the tires. Even if they don't hold up, your not out a lot.
btw where you been ?
Like the way you do your gazinta's chester_t . Going on week three, so far so good. With so many farm tractors around they will be easy to find. Problem comes from matching them up on the axle, generally when one shidder tire goes I have to change two.
Just one of those really hectic summers lopet pretty much time bankrupt. All kinds of visitors and more work than I can handle. Got that bad I had to take the phone numbers off the truck and cancel the answering service on the phone. Did not want to be rude and not do a return call , but when you get home and see 34 calls to return at 10pm it was to much. A lot of folks with tree issues after the wind storm Arthur. With the kids all back to school and the tourists going home things are calming down. Looking forward to a nice fall. Any more pics of your woods operation ?
Thanks Stephen. I know your feeling ,when you get swamped with work and it isn't fun anymore. Hope you find some time to get caught up. I always liked your pictures and stories from the east coast, specially when they were off topic.
Keep them coming
Yes I do have some more pictures of my operation, but I have a big mess in my albums and need to spend some serious time to get them sorted. It's pretty exhausting for a guy like me. ;D There is probably another way to do it, but nobody here to show me . :(
Was looking forward to another photo of edibles on the grill.
(When I get busy, I forget to eat...)
I took a picture for you last month, Stephen...
I had 8 ply tires on my backhoe. They leaked a little air. Made up some soap stuff to spray on them. Laughed my but off when every square inch of the tires got foamy :D
Hope the ones you got are better or newer or more useful :)
Lopet, look forward to your pics, you have an interesting setup. Getting started is easier said than done. :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/started.jpg)
NRE into kale smoothies and sweet potato freetatas but it is nice after a good meal just to be mellow. ;D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/Mellow.jpg)
Good catch sprucebunny, sat by the fire and watched the northern lights Friday night, could not get a pic of them that would do them justice but did get one of the fire. :)
No mention of the broken part in the gloved hand. What that be?
Good enough Stephen, it's almost as good as a view at the northern lights :)
Yeah, what's that broken piece in your hand ?
Lopet, you mentioned you had to get your photos sorted .... the pic is a piece of my starter off the skidder that failed yesterday , I have not been able to get started as well. Sorry beenthere I should have mentioned what it was.
There are some pics of the northen lights if you google it. I was able to download them , but my understanding of posting pics on the forum is they should belong to the person posting. :)
Managed to get a few more in my gallery today and than got sidetracked when my buddy called and invited me for a crop tour.
Well the Mrs wasn't too impressed with that at all :( I got a few things done today , just not quite as much as I had planned.
They'll come just give it a bit more time.
Yes no downloads of the net , that just ruins it. :)
Get another starter housing
Yes had one come in from upper Canada over the weekend. Starters for me are just a consumable like saw chain. Your gallery is coming along fine "giveher". :D
Thought I should mention sprucebunny , have had good luck with "all natural rubber" tubes. Just a thought in case you are working your backhoe farther from your compressor than you have airline to reach. ;D
Thanks, Stephen. I bought new 10 plies while they were still somewhat affordable :)
What a week, got around 80mm of rain to start the week. Living on an Island panic sets in if its salty. ???
As I mentioned good used 18.4-34's are scarce. Apparently they are being shipped abroad. Wanted to up date the Ag tire with chains trial. Well my vote is " ney ". Got 19 days no issues. Wed am started with laying down some slash parallel to the reparian zone and started to put a twitch together.
Moved ahead and got tangled up in a yellow birch top and woosh she was gone.
Managed to get her out to where I could get the chain off.
Said goodby to Aggie half way up the hill. "thanks for the dance"
Took awhile but got out to the landing.
Put on the spare tube and tire and called it a day. When I arrived back in the am...
Took it off patched it hauled acouple twitches.....
After I got out went and had a look at the next job. :D :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/h99.jpg)
I am glad its not just me with all the bad luck ;)
Man, that would definitively wreck my day. What happened ? Did you punch her?
It also looks like you got more water than you need .
Stephen, I once saw a video on youtube of a skidder limping out with a missing front tire running on three. the operator wedged a piece of round wood on the opposite side behind the tire and under the cradle to hold the cradle in position and from rocking and keep the bad tire or rim off the ground. Was accomplished by lifting the machine with the blade hyd. That was on a Timberjack , so not sure if the Tree Farmer has a same cradle set up. anyways looks a little moist in a few of those pics. Good luck, and git ur dun!!!!
Bad luck coxy? anything we can do to help. :)
Ya lopet she took a torpedo through the starboard side. Not surprised at all, was just hoping to solve the 18.4-34 canumdrum. I change them myself and they were just taking up space in the shed. Got some calls out but will probably have to park her till I can get some time later this fall to take a roadtrip.
Thanks David I will take a gander for that, on the plus side sure cleaned up that scale issue on the rim. :D
Finished up that building lot, back to the pit. :-\
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/d4.jpg)
Still no skidder tire so hooked up the grapple. Been awhile, kinda forgot what hose went where, I confuse myself ::)
Hard to tell wether I am going ahead or back.
Once you get started its not so bad. :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/l4.jpg)
wish you where closer to me I could hook you up with a few tires I don't use 18-4-34 any more
Thanks for sharing the pictures Stephen.
Paved road access, I could use that too some times.
Thanks coxy just as well your as far away from me as you are. Must have inadvertinly cut down the "rubber Fairies" favorite perch, she is not done with me yet. :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/h75.jpg)
Lopet this is what it looked like stumped. Nice work this time of year. ;)
While waiting form my next " suck it up princess, tale of tire wo" started recutting stumps on the skidder trail to access with the tractor.
Stephen, that looks like some of my twitches coming out of the woods too.
I always have to clean up the trails before I go in with the tractor so i am used to that. Bet skidding in reverse isn't that much fun. ;) Hope you find some tires soon .
In recent years the tractor is used for building lots. When I use it in a woodlot situation the winch is used to bunch the twitch cut to 8' then I turn around and use the grapple on the back to yard the wood. The 8' wood in the grapple comes out clean and no damage to the residuals as the grapple articulates left and right. On the return the slash can be picked up with the grapple and placed were ever. It would be nice to have a honda and pump for the trailer/loader then it could be used behind the truck or skidder and not have to take the grapple off the tractor to load the wood on the truck.
Hope everyone has a nice thanksgiving. From the look of the engine oil I changed yesterday got a lot to be thankfull for. :D...... sweet potato/kale fretata yum... :)
Thought I would update the tire sitch. Ordered a new 12 ply from Montreal, took a week, price 900+/_ .
So that is one 8ply and 4 weeks and one 12 ply one week.
Gone back to cutting skid trails for farm tractor just in case.
This a skid trail from 6 years ago when I was here.
This is the trail after a couple of passes.
Been giving the wood a bit of a rince , :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/12754/h114.jpg)
With the weather the skid trails are a bit of an issue.
They are not always the same land owner so try to keep them reasonable. No dozer so use the original tractor multitool.
It is reversible and power angle.

I like that. looks like no rocks at all. If I did that on my land I would have them from the size of a pea all the way up to a size of a car and some that you would need a stick of dynamite to make smaller. Had to do some blasting for my house.
Glad you found some decent tires and you're up and running again. My skid trails don't look quite as smooth as yours but a blade won't do the trick either around here. Yeah pretty wet fall and lots of mud here too.
that trail looks smother then our state rt17 ;D

YUM!!! Always enjoy your pics Stephen....and no I'm not just being nice so that I might get that recipe er nothing...but if ya wanted to give it to me, I'm sure I could put it to use! LOL!
Ironic cfarm if you had your rocks here you would be a rich man. :-\
Well coxy I usually have to go "hat in hand" to ask for permission and the last words of the landowner ring in my ears for days "just don't mess up my road". :)
Lopet the drive behind finding a cheaper tire is the want of a clearing saw. In the past the shafts were to short. Because of my size the older models ended up leaving a nasty stub. I tried the new stihl 560 and with the longer shaft the stub would be cut square and not at at an angle which would be bad on tires. At the very least should I lose an ag tire now the new forestry special would match up to the new ag tread . With any luck at all , I will be able to purchase them one at a time now. A clearing saw would do a nice job on some building lots or as a precut on some of the firewood sites.
First CCC4 shake the woodchips out of the beard and get as much 2stroke oil off your hands as possible. ;D. Preheat your oven to 350. Start a half dozen strips of bacon in one pan. Debark a sweet potato and cube to 1/4". Put in second frypan(not coated) an add a bit of oil good for frying. Season with salt ,pepper, celery seed, and black sesame seeds. Chop some onions and kale add when the potatoes soften. Keep stirring them so they do not burn. In a bowl stir eggs (one per person) add a bit of milk. When the onions are translucent take off the burner. Pour eggs on top. Grate some cheese add that then the chopped bacon. Put in oven for 15 minutes.
Cooking can be like falling a tree does not always turn out the way you expect....... :D :D

Came across this big hemlock yesterday. Thought about you folks out there that handle big wood everyday, man , tip of the hard hat to ya. :) Speaking of hard hats my face shield has been driving me crazy with glare. Partially because I probably need a new one and with the sun lower it gets worse. Probably can't tell from pic but painted it with a black permanent marker. Problem gone.

Went to haul out a twitch and rolled over this ol mouldboard. Its been a couple of months and no tire troubles. Running two forestry specials, one 12 ply combine tire and one eight ply ag tire. Have definately spent alot more time cuttung stubs debris. On the plus side the tread height is now all the same so if need be would get a new forestry special. The ag was 200,combine 900. Can get a log stomper for 1800+ and forestry special about 2500.

Thanks for all the great pictures 8)
Thanks for the update.
It seems that little cart comes in handy to get the generator around.
Found lots of scrap iron in the bushes in my live time also. Car hoods, doors, hay rakes . One time I drove over a old hay elevator which was only sticking about six inches out of the ground, fortunately no flat.
Keep it up. :)
Stephen, Rita read your post on that recipe you wrote for CCC4, now at supper I hear, well it time to debark the carrots,or debarking the tater's, and it's hard to debark turnip ;D :D ;) .
Nice photers. Thanks for sharing.
Was thinking at first that cart was a larger bar-b-q...
Got a 'before' picture on the otter/bver thingy?
You are welcome sprucebunny. Great to be in Jeffs home where you share what you have and it is enough. :)
Lopet those cart pics almost made their way unto your bucket list post. :D The wheels were throw away rear tires from old lawnmowers. Just needed a piece of angle iron to break the bead and add a tube. Carries up real well. May be a bad year for firewood, with the price of oil still in decline.
Thanks for the chuckle Ed_K. Sous chef can be a tough gig. It is all about communication...communication... communication. ;)
Sorry no pics of before NRE. "The otter/beaver thingie" ... I like it !!! Just messing with the grinders. Wondered how they would do on a piece of Yellow Birch. Zip cuts, grinding and wire attachments. Oh and SMOKE lots of SMOKE. :D
Late night , trying to get things tidied up before the next big storm. Stay Safe.
