Title: i visited a mill today
Post by: yukon cornelius on June 30, 2014, 10:38:13 PM
well its been about a month since I left the property and I needed some cedar logs so I headed out on a long 4-5 minute journey to a see a real mill  :D I knew this place was there and a few months ago I met him. he was a really nice guy and had a fantastic place. he was raised amish and now is doesn't live the amish lifestyle. he runs a fantastic frick with a 12 cylinder deutz air cooled diesel. he showed me his ford f150 that he put a 5 cylinder deutz diesel engine in.

I ended up buying about 50, 100 inch long cedar logs in the area of 5-6 inch diameter. that will set me up for making swings for a while.  8) sorry no pics this time maybe next visit.

What year range was the truck?  We started installing a 6cylinder air cooled air diesel in a 1981 ford f-150 but pushed it back in the barn and there it sits.  I guess we will start on that project again someday when lots of other things are done.  The biggest problem we had was electrical but that will be easy enough to straiten out.

Does he happen to have any amish coworkers working with him that are still amish?

it was a 1997  f150.  he says he was aiming for a 40 mpg truck but the best he can get is 24. he says it just a 100 hp engine. I didnt ask how he dealt with the truck electronics. engine electronics is one thing but the chassis is another.

I didnt ask if he had amish that work with him but I think he works alone. hes not very old maybe 40s at most. im not one to ask a lot of questions.

12 cylinder Deutz! That must be something to see. Don't know what you paid for the post but the Amish at Humansville sell them pretty cheap.

Yukon....Thanks for the information.

I was curious as to the help availability as there is a mill about 30 miles from me that's owned by a no longer Amish Gentleman and he has issues hiring Amish workers because of him no longer being Amish.  Very nice guy, hard working and takes care of those that work for him.

Its interesting how he is treated because of no longer being Amish.
