Title: Caught Crooks with my new video camera system
Post by: Busy Beaver Lumber on July 10, 2014, 04:24:47 PM
Installed home security video cameras back in August of 2013. Wife thought it was overkill and that we lived in real safe area, by i told her you can never be too careful.

This past Monday at 2:15 in the morning, 5 teens hit our block looking for open cars to steal from.

They even put gloves on and were bold enough to ignore motion activated flood lights. What the idiots failed to do was check for the presence of security cameras, a mistake they will regret.

The tall one who entered the truck, and who is over 18 years old, has already be identified and is being questioned by police. Should have them all soon.

All they took was two containers of Tic Tacs and a $1.99 led flashlight. Kind of stupid to get a permanent police record over two packages of Tic Tacs and a flashlight. :D

What are kids that age doing out at 2:15 AM? Some look very young. The bold brats have plenty of trouble now.

Nice catch.  Try locking your doors?  Then if they break a window you get them on even more charges.

Nothing good happens after 2 am. I was gratified to hear a cousin and a friend of my daughter talk about life after work, what they feel like doing after a full days labour.....nothing. The young fellow was saying to me one evening that after work he didn't feel like going out or doing anything he was just too tired. Those five young lads need a day job and then we would know where they were at 2 am. Asleep.

We both know what the courts will do, a stern lecture and a warning not to do it again.   I'd prefer for them to get a couple hundred hours of community service.   That would do wonders for the wayward young men. ;D ;D

In Arkansas for it to be evidence, you have to have a sign posting that you have video surveylance.

Do they require no trespassing signs on the cars too?  That seems to me a ridiculous law.

Very good security video. Most of the time when I see them they are grainy and hard to get a good look at.
How about a little info on your system?.

Didn't say I thought it was a good law, just metioned it. I don't have any video surveylance. I have dogs and projectile emiting devises.

I know where you're coming from bt, but that is one of the things wrong with our legal system. Rock salt in the butts of those brats should be encouraged.

I don't disagree about the need for "penalty" be it a good whipping, capital punishment (a cane stick), or whatever.

Just that society rears up on their hind legs as do parents who think their little kiddies have done no wrong.
So if the rock salt takes out an eye, then someone is going to pay big time.

busy beaver lumber,
good job, I am hoping they get a ton of community service, when I was 15, some of us went out in our neighbor hood and soaped windows, threw toilet paper in trees etc.  Nothing like stealing, but when I got caught that night my dads foot in my butt cured me and i never did that again.

That's what they need. The parents are responsible. Again, what were they doing looking for trouble at 2:15 AM? Pain should be had for all!

projectile emiting devises.

I kind of like that term.
I refer to the projectiles as high speed telegrams.

This is a very clear video.  It just gives me the creeps thinking what all goes on when the lights go out.   These young'uns  have very little ambition at this point in their life,  I hope they get a rounded education.

it looks like the law is on the side of the crooks. what should we expect as most of our laws are written by career criminals. or should i say politicians. :) you are not allowed to shoot someone for stealing your stuff.

What kind of system do you have?  I have a dropcam pro and it is very clear too.  Night vision is excellent - equipped with sound - both ways.  You can scare the crap out of folks when you tell the wife to grab the shotgun  :D

It's better to catch them with a camera than with buckshot.  You'll regret shooting some underage kid whose broken into your car, even if it's only birdshot in the derrier.  I'm not saying they don't deserve it.  I am saying that taking the law into your own hands with a deadly weapon when your own life is not threatened will be a loser - for you - in court.

Nice catch with the camera!

Those kids probably don't realize it yet, but your video camera may have caused some of those five kids to take a look at their lives and the "friends" they keep and make some life deciding decisions for the better.

In my opinion, the best thing the Judge could do would be to plop their tiny hinies in a jail cell for about a week. Feed them lima beans and rice for breakfast, take them out to work all day cleaning roadways and feed them lima beans and rice for supper. Then have them write a letter of apology to be printed in the local newspaper.  Hopefully, the parents will take further action.

I like lima beans and rice. I'll pass on the road work and bubba wanting you to be his play toy.

Saturday I went and pre-surveyed a sawing job.  When I got back into the car, Pat asked "if I had smiled for the camera".  Of course my question was "what camera?".  "The one on that tree" she replied.

There are eyes looking even when you are doing nothing wrong.   ;D

Rock salt is great and all but you have to be awake to use it. I firmly believe in public shaming as a deterrent for future crimes. In this instance, make all of the little vagrants wear a t-shirt that says "I Stole $2.99 Worth of Goods and now I have to Complete 90 days of Service. How's your summer going?". Then they get to pick up trash in the local mall parking lot, parks, and any other place that a lot of people will see them.

Secondly, I fully agree that parents are responsible for their kids. If the kid gets in trouble, be it stealing, vandalism, drug use, or whatever, the parent is held responsible as well and should partake in a portion of the public shaming. Their t-shirt will read "I didn't teach my child that stealing is wrong, so now I have to pick up trash with them. Have you talked to your kid today?" I don't like it when parents cry "my kid is an angel" and then are asked a question "why was your kid out at 2:30am?" with no response.

As you can see, I am biased in my opinions n this topic, but that's just how I feel.

BBL, nice one on getting good cameras. when they appear in court, propose to the judge that they all get 360 hours of service, which should cover the rest of their summer.

I got smartened up last week too. Neighbor around the corner had his car stolen out of his driveway. 2 houses up the street another car was broken into and of all things only his keys were missing. I got into my old car the other day and the glove box was open... nothing missing, nothing worth taking I guess.
Will be putting up a couple of trail cams. I hate to do it but times have changed for the worse I'm afraid.

that looks like a great system, good thing the cops are pursuing them

I have  a friend who is into security cameras, has his house wired with 6 cameras and 6 at the business.

constantly recording everything, and he can check every camera from the internet on his smart phone or computer

he has 4 tv screens in his office and all of the camera angles are on there. he can see someone on his property from work or when monitoring his phone.

has already caught two burglars who first cased out his house looking in the door for a full face mug shot
then they went next door and broke in. he had it all on camera and the guys are currently in jail because of it.

I need to do something like that also. I would be curious what kind of cameras and equipment you use to get those shots

Sorry for delay in responding. Been crazy busy with business. We have picked up over 35 new firewood customers this year as one of our local competitors is going down for the count due to a tragic medical condition. His customers are calling and begging us to take them on and supply them with bundled wood. This is keeping us busy as all get up as our firewood business has literally doubled in the past month

Then on top of that, every free moment i have is being put into our decks, patio. and gazebo project and wife just added a request for wood swing set and tower for the grand kids.

The camera system is made by Q-SEE. I did a lot of research before I picked them.  I have the QT4760 16 channel input DVR with 1 terrabite internal hard drive and 8 600 TVL cameras that are full color during the day, and IR during the night as seen in the video. Bought it at Home Depot for $499 for the entire system and am very pleased with it. Can monitor all cameras and control entire system from android phone. Physical Installation was very simple and took less than 1 day. Software was a bit trickier and did take a few calls to their tech support to configure properly, but they did get the job done in the end.

I like the idea of the parents get time to do community service BUT it has to be during work time 8to5 so they miss work at their regular job. Rita has a couple nephew's who think going to jail is fun.

As a kid growing up, that is how I paid for my school clothes and more. In da fall it was picking potatoes. My school actually allowed me excused absences to pick potatoes, as long as I kept my grades up. I doubt that would happen today.  :-\

I haven't purchased a major system for our place yet.  I currently have a couple wireless cameras as part of my security system that send alerts and uploads video online where it is safely stored.   There are a couple issues with wired cameras that are forcing me to look at other options.    I have a friend that installed a wired system after his shop and barn were broke into.  Thieves came back and stole 3 motorcycles and chainsaws... and the video recorder.   They followed the wires from one of the cameras and broke open the cabinet where the recorder was.      It's also difficult to get wired cameras connected if they are at a distance.  You either need to string or burry the wire, neither is best option.
I'm considering buying two different systems.  Both will have wired and wireless cameras.   The distance between my house and the back side of my shop where the sawmill and equipment are makes wiring difficult and it's marginal for reliable wireless camera connections.    Installing both wired and wireless allows me to get some cameras out where they need to be to cover different angles.   That way I will have multiple view of any thieves.

Hopefully the thieves don't have ability to interfere with or hack your wireless.

Yes old thread but interesting read.

Gerald,

A guide I used in South Africa on a couple of photo safaris said they passed a law there prohibiting the sale of reloading supplies but a buddy of his got around it for several years by ordering projectiles and propellant till they caught on.

Doctorb.

You are making an assumption we have a conscience about such. What was the old country western song "My give a d--n is broken". I am sympathetic to a fault and willing to try to help anyone but pretty intolerant of people who make excuses to steal.

An  eternity ago a wizened old USMC major sat me down and explained to me the Single significant Emotional Event theory of management and discipline as it pertained to Marines under our command. Too many people look at a wayward youth, Marine or civilian, who engages in unacceptable behavior and try to look into his past to determine the "Single Significant Emotional Event" that led him down his wayward path when the proper procedure was actually to "Create a New Single Significant Emotional Event" of such an overwhelming magnitude it completely overrides the individual's previous Single Significant Emotional Event for all times and redirects him to more socially acceptable conduct in the future.
