A friend gave me a nice bat box. Pine Creek runs through my front yard so I know where to put it. The question is, would the bats prefer to have it in the open or near the trees? Anybody know?

I built one as well and put it up on a post. The only tree as tall near it was a small fir. I think they like the heat more than the shade as long as it's shady inside the box and has good air flow through the box.

Google bat houses as there is a lot of information on where to place them. Putting them in a tree is not recommended. Mine is mounted high up on the wall of my shop under the eve. I had to build a second house as the first one filled up very fast so I know the placement instructions work!
Here is where we put the one up to the cabin. Those doors are facing east, but no shade. There were Bats in there when I was leveling them a few weeks ago.
