Title: Rosie the Riveter
Post by: Magicman on August 23, 2014, 04:24:52 PM
I have no idea why Rosie came to my mind as I started this build other than the fact that it would be built with metal instead of wood.  There would also be no rivets, but self drilling screws.

The problem was an add-on on our home created a valley that drained directly onto our deck.  I had placed gutters years ago, but they quickly accumulated Pine straw so I removed them.  Pat suggested covering that portion of the deck, but I hesitated to use conventional framing lumber.

A trip to our local metal roofing manufacturer/fabricator yielded the answer.  I would use pre-primed 4" channeling which was sized so that the cross pieces fit inside of the support pieces.  The cover would be 9'X10'.

With all of the steel framing up, I screwed the 26 ga. roofing down.  I wanted a more finished look so I also screwed 29 ga. roofing to the underside to serve as a ceiling.

The fascia trim is 6" which gave the entire project a nice finished look.

Now I've gotta find the right post to replace the temporary support.  It's gonna be wood.   :)

Looks great. Can tell you have no snow load to worry about. Why not just box it in with cedar and paint it to match the existing posts?  :)

Nope, snow was never even a twinkle of a thought.  I have a 2" drop in 10' which is enough for rain to run off.

I do have some 2¼X4½ ERC fence rails that have been stacked in the open for several years and have already weathered.  I may can find two with opposing wood grain that I can screw together.  Just a thought.

I never thought about calling you Rosie before.  Maybe it is your female side coming out.

Yup Don, Black Locust would work very well and I could do a round/square post like Poston did a couple of weeks ago.  The main problem being that "fresh cut" it would be yellow, and the "Chief of Decorations" would object.   ;D

Lynn,
While you are deciding on what kind of post to use, you should fire up that grill and cook up some steaks! That would make the decision a lot easier! Good looking job on the cover. Do you miss the sawdust???? ??? ???

If Magicman starts wearing a dress like his S.C. Cousin, I know I'll never try eating grits!  ;D

I have way to much respect for Rosie Lynn to refer to him with feminine sounding nomenclature, however the name does have a nice ring to it! :D  :)  ;D

It has rained a few times, but this is the first time that I have thought to take a picture.

No need for gutters anymore.

Thanks.  Actually, I am waiting for the Chairman of Decorations to decide that the rest of the deck needs covering.  :-X  ::)
