Guys,
My travel plans are finalizing for coming up to the Heartwood school in western massachusets for the week of Aug 7 - 14th. I decided to sign up for the TF Guild "Trees to Timber" seminar. Hope it is not a waste of time...
Jim (and others) how close are you to Heartwood?
I got a day or two to kill before/after the workshop. I thought I might swing by and visit any nearby folks or othewise find something interesting to do.
Any suggestions?
Greg
Greg:
On August 7th, I'll be holding a regular Saturday workshop, here at the sawmill yard.
We recently completed the last frame and raised it on July 10th. Photos to be posted shortly.
The next workshop frame is very similar to the Garden Shed in the book by Jack Sobon, with some modifications and special timbers.
If you're available on that day, you're welcome, to come over.
I didn't think the class started until Monday, the 9th?
My map program says it's about 2 3/4 hours drive from Heartwood to Georgetown, probably 3 or so.
Are you driving or flying?

I'm flying into Hartford late Saturday afternoon (saving big $$$ on airfare). The timing probably won't work.
For some reason I was thinking you were much further inland, Jim. Oh well, maybe next time.
Are you going to the TFG conference near Pittsburgh this October? Looks like given the nice resort they've picked, I'm going to drag the family along. Its an easy 1/2 day drive for me.
Cheers,
Greg

Greg:
If you have some time on Sunday and want to see some interesting barns and such, you could drive over to the Shaker village near Pittsfield.
If you want the link to their site I should be able to find it.
The have a really neat round barn there.
It's not far from Washington, Ma at all.
Jim Rogers
PS. Yes, I'm going to the Eastern Conference, in PA.
Sure, send me the link if you can find it. Pittsfield is only 1/2 hour or less from there...
Thanks,
Greg

To reach the Hancock Shaker Village website, click on this link: Link to Shaker Village (http://www.hancockshakervillage.org/).
On the home page you can see a photo of the round barn. The pass you buy is good for several days and you can come back again and see other stuff or events going on that week or weekend.
You can take a guided tour if you time it right, and that's a good way to hear all about the life at the village. Or you can just walk around by yourself and look at all the buildings and things.
(The gift shop there is where I got my cool shaker straw hat, every timber framer should have one :))
Have fun 8)

So, how was it?
QuoteSo, how was it?
It was a blast.
Walked a bunch of Mass. woodlots big and small, learning how to select, harvest and develop trees for timbers.
Dodged two hurricanes.
Toured Cowls in North Amhurst, watching 2 ft. Hemlock being harvested, milled to timbers, to grading, on to the truck.
Spent a day at Jack Sobon's place. What a super guy. When I grow up, I want to be like Jack ;-)
Got several dozen digital pics I will be putting up on the net somewhere soon.
Only disappointment was I had only an hour or so at Hancock Shaker Village.
