Hi I have an old Jonsered of my fathers that I would like to get running again. serial #8360846. I would like to test the ignition coils (it has the black sem 2 piece ignition coil). What is the best way to go about testing their operation?
I have asked a dealer about replacing both parts and he was talking over $150/each which is probably more than the actual saw is worth.
I got a set of coils from CHAINSAWR
A quick search returns results for coils around $30 or less. Can get aftermarket 2 piece coils for around $70. I don't know, maybe the 2-piece models can be converted to use the 1 piece coil?
To test the coils (test for spark) use a dedicated spark tester, or how most people do it, ground the plug on the cylinder, and see if it sparks when you pull it over.
Saws need spark, compression, and fuel to run. If it's got spark, move to the next test.
No they cant. But try replacing the lower coil first. Just eBay the things. And before spending the money on a coil, try disconnecting the on/off switch & make certi=ain you have a good spark plug...after checking the stupid stuff that also includes the plug cap and wire from coil to the switch etc.
Take care, there are two types of two module ignition systems, each with their special flywheel, and parts aren't interchangeable.
thx I have found the part numbers from jonsered
501 51 61 02 for the primary coil and 501 51 62 01 for the secondary unit
now just to find somewhere to get them cheap
