Are you going to send him home with a glacier for WDH? :D They can try quarter sawing it.
i wanted wdh to come along so he could say he has sawed frozen logs but, he got scared :D :D
Are you in Spooner, Wisconsin, Red Oaks Lumber?
If you got room for one more. I would like to come. Consider me in upon approval!
Will you be speaking on STICKERS?
Will you have Grits for breakfast?
If not....I ain't coming. :D

Sounds like you had better win that hoody auction.
30's is great working weather. Just got to get them muscles warmed up early so you dont hurt yourself. Im good to -20 before the gears start whining. ;D
Hey Steve, I will be heading your way on that day. Still recovering from having my gallbladder taken out on Monday so I should be good to go on the 13th. Have been meaning to stop so this is a good chance to visit. Don
arrrr i'm on call that weekend! how on earth did you get a southern boy to come to northern wi in december? it's right in the song! "it's the coldest time of winter....and i shiver when i see the falling snow" :D
I can remember Marcel talking about going on a trip to the south in warm weather. He didn't make it to the mason Dixon line and said the heck with this, it is too hot and turned around and went home. I can see this happening in reverse. Why oh why would someone from Georgia ever want to go to Wisconsin in December? Jake about froze to death in Michigan in August.
Sounds great but my old frostbite still kicks up in the cold. :snowfight1:
I'm thinking I'm going to be warming up in greenhouse 1 that day. Should still be hitting 90 in there. ;D 8) 8) 8) :snowball:

That was from the cold shoulder I was getting from folks when I asked for Grits. :D
I am looking forward to this trip as it is going to be a great opportunity for learning. (mostly about cold weather ;D)
Steve and I have been talking about one of us making a trip for a while and things finally fell into place. Maybe not the best timing but I'll take it when I can get it. It will be great to meet any others that can make it over.
Dave,
Maybe Jake will bring us a big glacier home. Probably over 4' on the little end :D.
Oh, I bet rol will have bigger glaciers than that by now. :D
you guys are to much :D :D i was dissapointed with the weather forcast ;)jakes going to think we just whine about the cold.oh he'll still shiver :)
a couple of weeks back i asked if he was going to bring warm clothes, his southern draw talk said," yup i gotta a sweater i was fixin to wear" i couldn't even muster a word for a few seconds but, the thoughts racing threw my head were scary. finally i said jake i don't think a sweater will cut it.he came back with (still in his southern draw) *DanG son you think i'm stupid? my answer was" i was wondering" :D :D
I just had a mental image of Jake in his cowboy hat and a red turtle neck sweater trying to quarter saw one of RO's glaciers.
YH
Cold is cold, but up that way, it really cuts! Nothing to mess around with when it sets in, sounds like it's going to be a very fun time with the odd couple ;D and friends,
Jake---Not to worry----just looked at the forecast for Sat.----51 degrees. Unheard of , do you suppose that you could hang around for a while and help keep the balmy temps up :D :D :D :D I will bring my left over from hunting hand warmers for you :D :D :D :D :D :snowball: Don
Jake, the cold is easy to take care of, you can always put another layer on and put another stick in the fire, down south when it gets hot.... only so much can be taken off before the eyes start to hurt...... :-\
I made it to Georgia once, like Jeff said, thats where the south for me ended ;D :D Headed back north the Murtle beach.
Be interesting if 51° is in the forecast for the 13th.
But that is not too bad. Look forward to it.
You gotta remember where Jake grew up. :snowball:
And that was?
Colorado Country Boy.
Those that know, it's no biggy, but the wind chill , and it will be, still get attention, cold up that way, a deep cold for sure, just figure the lakes freeze over up to 2' thick, or more, this is cold, stuff.
When those lakes freeze up, it only makes going fishing easier. :)
I'll try to make it, it will be nice to head a little south and get to the warm weather
Just for the record I have been ice fishing out of the truck window so you could sit with the engine running.
When I was growing up in Colorado I remember one winter where we spent 6 weeks looking forward to a high of -20. :o
When we milked the cows we would shoot the milk across our arm and carry it in like firewood. :D

Good one Jake... we must of been rich, we had indoor milkin' Had the tin of Nestly's chocolat in the barn and when milking in the morning we always had our warm chocolat while milkin'.
:D : :D i had a visual of you "farmers" milking away complete with straw hats and sprigs of barley in your mouths . ;D
Now this sounds like a fun time, you guys don't for get about us watching on our screens at home!
i ordered a grit sniffing dog, there is strong evidence that grits might be smuggled into the no grits zone :D :D
:D :D sounds much like my wife's onion sniffer, sometimes we must just let folks alone and eat what they want, although, given half a chance, I bet Jake could whip up a batch that just might sway the masses ;D
Steve if you will throw those grits in a crock pot over night with butter, salt and pepper. Then 30 minutes before serving put in some velveeta cheese your guest will not be disappointed.I'm talking about a spiritual awakening here, trust me.al
I'd be tempted to run over if it were not for that big lake in the way.

I don't post much, but do a lot of reading here. Am only 35 miles away and am going to try to come. For all you southern boys , I looked back at my daily journal for last year. Don't have a temp marked down for 13th of dec, but have -10 for the 6th and -18 on the 7th. other days around there I just wrote" cold" . And seemed to be plowing snow every other day. I think its real nice of ROL to have ordered up some nice balmy weather for his event.
Oh man! That sounds like a great spread there Red Oaks!!! I will be making the trip down for sure. Will try and get to the dairy for some cheese. But we have to be careful. With great cheese comes great responsibility! I ate a big bag of curds for lunch back in the day. and a week later it came out as one giant curd :o....
You guys have me spraying coffee on the computer. :D :D :D

according to slider al it must be veelveta cheese curds :D :D
Ether one Steve as long as you stir it in.Thanks for the invite but it's the wrong time of the year for me.By the way I got in trouble for bringing up the velveeta word in cheese country.Customsawyer brought that to my attention yesterday.

i wont hold that against you.up here 2 things aren't real. 1) velveeta 2) grits :D :D
i should add for anyone coming ,the shop is heated at a comfortable 65 deg.
Well it looks like our weatherman has changed his mind a bit. Now it looks more like around 38 degrees instead of the balmy 51 :D :D :D The 38 still isn't to bad considering it is above freezing. 8) 8) :snowball: Don

I met Jake in April - during supper I was called Scooter.

Apparently the grits were masked by something, most likely food, to entice rol into eating them. Straight grits would have been lethal to a first time eater. I'm sure sawdust would be downright tasty covered in cheddar cheese and chili. :D

I made the trip, but was late so was only the two main characters left. I walked right by the grits[I think] and they didn't bite me so they must be ok. had an enjoyable visit with rol and Jake. I'm just a part timer/hobbyist sawyer/planer and was sort of surprised to hear the full timers have many of the same problems I do. Rol repeated what another planer guy had told him, "I've been doing this 20 years and and still learn something new every day". Which is sure true. So in spite of all the grits and stickers rhetoric , a pair of fine fellows. Thanks Steve.

A big warm southern Thank You out to ROL for having me and putting the feed together for myself and the others.
Just for the rest of the southerners on here, don't let them fool you. They talk about how cold it is up here and the coldest I have seen is 34° so I am going to bet that they are lying about not liking grits. They just don't want to admit it in front of each other. Okay here are your pics that I downloaded from my phone. All I can tell you is you are going to have to turn your head sideways to see them.
Just for the record I found Sweet tea up there.

They had sausage and lard in the same place at the grocery store so they can't be all bad up there in the great not so white north. ;D

Here is ROL getting the Velveeta ready.

This is the heard getting up to the grub and Grits.

This is ROL and his son Dex trying the Grits. They were timid till they tasted them.

This is some of the others enjoying the Grits. The young feller on the right told me the Grits were the best part of the meal. He then asked for seconds. :D I'm not sure I agree with him as the fresh meat was mighty fine.

This is ROL, myself, Dex and Levi. Just for the record Levi likes Grits too.

it happened,
the b.s was rushing so hard it knocked us all sideways :D :D just shows who the photo operator was that day
Well I missed trying out the grits at ROL's and having 100 per cent faith in Steve and the fact that he said that it wasn't too bad , I am going to town to buy some and fix it for myself----we will see. While in town I will drop my tub of lutefisk over by the dog pound to make sure I get the proper seasoning done to the lutefisk. 8) :D :D :D Maybe I should leave the grits there too?????? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Eh. I missed it all. Got up, getting ready to go. I was reminded that I have a project to finish, and I realized my day would not go well if I did not finish it... I hate responsibility! Sorry Red Oaks. Hope the bison burger didnt go to waste?
LOL. Lard and sausage in the same place! too funny!

I was chatting with him on the phone the other night and I told him the same thing....I didn't hardly recognize him. At first, I thought he was ROL's brother. running-doggy
Why does rol look like he spent the weekend under a bare bulb? I can just imagine what had to happen to get him to switch to the dark side. "Ve haf vays of making you eat grits!". :o
Just sinze ze papers..........
I wanted to go to Spooner I really did. I had a business deal and a personal cabin build that needed my attendance however.
My grits experiance starts and stops with what Cracker Barrell (clearly I can't spell) serves. It's true you will find as many grits here in wisconsin as you will find lutefisk or lefse in Georgia.
Sorry I couldn't make it to the party.
John.
:D :D :D looks like the comedy club has open keyboard session 8) again ;D

By Poplar Demand. ;D
Is that yellow poplar or aspen ??? ;D
You guys need some lumber to stack. I can see you have to much time on your hands. ;D
Hey Steve you are right---no grits anywhere. I stopped at the dog pound to get my--by now fully seasoned lutefisk and noticed one dog licking his backside something terrible. I asked the pound master what was wrong with the dog. He said the dog tried to eat some of the lutefisk instead of seasoning it and was trying to get rid of the bad taste. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D 8) :o
:-X :D
lutefisk is some awful tasteless slim. yuck !! glad i dont have to endure that every christmas anymore. :D

Neve heard of it? say_what
I think it's like grits,either you like it,or hate it. ;D
QuoteNeve heard of it? say_what
there must not be many norwegians down there ;) :)
I thought prairie country was settled by Metis, Ukrains and Scots. The Nords exited post haste once they found out who their neighbors were, eating raw meat in northern Labrador. :D
Ray...not like grits at all. you either hate it, or you really, really hate it. ;)
