Title: BIG BURL
Post by: pasbuild on August 15, 2004, 07:27:22 PM
I,v been getting my fire wood and some White and Black Ash from the job site that I,m currently on, while looking for a way to get the skid steer to the ash trees I stumbled across this --Photos MUST be in the Forestry Forum gallery!!!!!--.com/albums/v418/pasbuild/bigburl.jpg[/img]

It is 41" wide 36" high and 28" deep Yellow birch. I got a couple of the retired guys in the hood to help me get it out.
Its going to take some creative positioning to get this one cut ;) ;)

NO
The burl will be sliced into turning blanks and table tops on the mill, I'll have the Ash milled at a friends mill just down the road from the job site its EZer to get the lumber home then the logs ;) the tops will be going home as fire wood.

CAREFUL -- Frank

Ya never know when a fella may be English, in which you just bid $1200 depending upon the exchange rate.

Unless of course England is now using the Eurodollar. :D

nice chunk! I have used quite a few of these yellow birch burls in my furniture projects, I will suggest watching how this baby will dry. I would say at least half of all the yellow birch burls I have brought home and milled, have fallen apart like onion rings. I think It just depernds on the burl, I tried leaving the bark on , taking it off immediatley, treating the disks with wax or paint it didn't really matter. some you  just get lucky with. If I can ever figure out downloading [pictures I have me posing with a 6foot dia by 5 ft high yellow birch burl we found on a moose hunting trip. to much work to get her home. good luck lets see the pics. of the final product....burlman...

I saw one like that to pasbuild. It was on crown land and in an area of heavy blow down. It just so happened to be near a camp of some folks I knew. And it also happened to be on a license that was managed by one of the guy's nephews. So, as it turned out the guy had a salvage crew in on the lot to clean up softwood blow down and they brought out this huge burl for the guys. The yellow birch was about 30 inches at dbh. I also found a huge burl on a elm next to the farm. The elm was  11.5 feet  (est. 50 inch dbh) in circumference above the burl (about 6 feet high). The elm died after a clear cut and dutch elm disease.

Too much heavy work for me. :D :D

Pasbuild,

Amazing burl!  I was hoping to chat with you at the pig roast, since I saw you were from Marquette--unfortunately didn't get the chance to talk to everyone there.  But this post about the burl you found reminded me of a retired logger who lives in Marquette that I had hoped to talk to you about.  He's a turner, and he has the biggest collection of burls I've ever seen!  Around his place, he must have 400 or so burls, and that's no exaggeration.  Perhaps you know him--do you know a turner/retired logger by the name of Dick A.?

Just curious if you know him, cause he's a great guy.  We met at a gas station in Rapid River.  He had a band saw strapped to his trailer, so I struck up a conversation.  45 minutes later, he invited to see his shop.  He turns great stuff and I'm glad I got the chance to know him.  I think he'd enjoy the forum, but unfortunately he doesn't have a computer.

Anyway, nice burl, and if you get the chance, let me know if you know him.

Dan M.

PS  If there are any turners out there interested in getting a hold of some quality burls, I can put you in contact with this guy.

Nice work pasbuild.
When you said you find alot of cherry burl in one place the first thing that popped into my mind is this guy is gathering black knot infected cherry. But those bowls don't look like black knot or they'de be full of black gum pockets. All my cherry have black knot which wouldn't be as nice as those pieces you have for turning. They may be ok if ya slice off the infection and use the heartwood of the main stem.

cheers

One of my neighbors came over to help me put the BIG BURL to the knife ;)

I was a little disappointed in that it didn't have that crazy grain pattern that is often found in burls.I cut three burl caps, four table tops and the rest was cut 4 to 6 in. thick for bowl blanks. there was some nice color variation were the heart wood grew into the burl and a little spalting were the heart wood ended and the burl wood --Photos MUST be in the Forestry Forum gallery!!!!!--.com/albums/v418/pasbuild/poto3burlslice.jpg[/img]

pasbuild:

Ever get any burls that are cherry red? Some of our yellow birch get cherry red up here and the bark is usually silver-grey in those specimens. Some fellas call them silver birch. But I think its like trembling aspen sometimes, such as the fact that some of them have white bark like white birch (it doesn't peel of course) and others are greyish-green. Must be just the environment they grow in.

I'v had spruce burls with red, purple, green and every kind of brown you can think of in them( not all in one burl), some of the cheery burls can be a bright red, some will be loaded with eyes on the outside layers.
I'v had hard maple burls that look like they were mineral stained with every color from black to a pinkish color all in the same burl, they make an outstanding looking bowl when you get them shined up.

I've seen birds eye in yellow birch and white ash also. I didn't know it was in yellow birch until a lad was splitten stove wood and brought a piece with the bark still on it, definately yellow birch.

Our white ash burls look like they have eye from the --Photos MUST be in the Forestry Forum gallery!!!!!--.com/albums/v418/pasbuild/ashbark.jpg[/img]
on the inside they also look like eyes but I'v never had anybody call them --Photos MUST be in the Forestry Forum gallery!!!!!--.com/albums/v418/pasbuild/2ashburl.jpg[/img]

The birds eye I've seen is in the straight grain, not the burls. Although, the burls of birds eye figured trees probably have it.
