I am moving to Missouri this year and looking to build another home. I found budgethomekits.com online and am thinking that it would make for a fast build. I am just wondering if anyone here has built one, or had any dealings with the company. Experience is the best teacher and tapping into this huge database of knowledge that is known as The Forestry Forum might help me decide if I should trust them. Thank you
corrected the web site
I put steel floor joist in my house ,9 1/4 x1 5/8 inch , on 12" centers . Nice flat floor ,joist run from side to side without a lapjoint. But they transmit noise very well and fast . They take longer to install because of the stiffners and multiple screws at each joint. I would not use them again in a house . As shop would be alright ,or some other out building.
thanks Don, that is the type of feedback I was hoping for. I have not had any experience with steel building materials other than pole barn sheeting.
I spent about a half hour on their site looking around. I really do not think they are cheap for what they are supplying. They are all on a slab, something I am not used to, but the floor costs that we have here are not in there.
I built my own 1340 sq ft house out of wood, framed it up two years ago in three weeks with help for 4 days on the roof. Other than that I was working alone. I was under 30K at that point, but remember I had a substantial floor, 14-32 TJIs with Advantech decking that they are not supplying. Osb on the outside, but I want wood siding anyway, no termites here.
Its apples to oranges, but I have not built any steel homes. I don't have a problem with them, my buddy has one that is 40 years old now with no issues. I just question how "Cheap" their kit really is. They are very light on specifics so it is hard to draw a bead on it.
In conclusion, I have not come to a conclusion but...... I would do some more research. Steel studs are cheap, maybe putting your own kit together will save you some money? I like wood because it is easier to get creative with, but on a straight up house it would not be any big deal.
Maybe check in with a large drywall supplier, they carry steel building componants for commercial buildings and may be able to help guide you.
