Title: NEW TO THE FORUM
Post by: THUNDER BEAST on February 10, 2015, 03:27:46 PM
Hello everybody, I just found this forum this morning and joined up. My name is John and I am soon to be 48 years old. I have for the past 20 years been a full time bait shop owner and fishing guide in SE, WI. I am in the process of starting a bison ranch in NW, WI The farm land I purchased has plenty of big red pine on it so I got to thinking that I would like to purchase a log mill and saw out my new home and barn. I am in the process of that purchase along with a tractor/grapple and a dump trailer/winch, a edger/and kiln among many other items for this new adventure. I am very excited to have found this forum for its wealth of knowledge that its members have. I shall be here daily reading past posts to absorb said knowledge in an attempt to keep my learning curve on a fast tract and minimize my mistakes. Thank you all very much for accepting me here. John

Hello THUNDER BEAST, and Welcome to the Forestry Forum.   :)

Adding your location to your profile will help with future questions.

My suggestion is to visit several sawyers with different brands (manufacturers/models) of sawmill before deciding which sawmill to buy.  That, or just get a Wood-Mizer LT40 SuperHydraulic and "Get-R-Done".   :D

Welcome to the Forestry Forum.
Sounds like a great move to NW WI.

Will be interested in the buffalo ranching.

Maybe you can verify, or negate, a comment made to me that a lone buffalo will not prosper. i.e. from a guy who has two buffalo, one doing well and the other not so well. Said he'd separate them, but knows that they will die from loneliness ?  Is that true?

Welcome, THUNDER BEAST!  My brother has been talking about raising "tatonka", he'll be interested in your adventure.

My daughter's parents have a house on Lake Geneva ("Rainbow Point" in Fontana), in fact that's where the kids were married.  Beautiful place.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much Ladys and Gents for the warm welcome. I have spent the entire day and night going through the many subjects on the site. I see here there is the old Chevy vs Dodge vs Ford debate on the mills of choice. I have spent the past couple of months researching mills and probably the past two years researching a tractor. I will reveal my choices when they are here on my property, I do not want to have a change of heart once I call and have them ordered.  Mr. red oaks lumber I look forward to speaking with you. I hope I get an invite to come meet you, as I pass by your place headed to mine. pm me your phone if you like. As for if one bison will survive without another, all I can say is they definitely do better in a herd. My days have been filled with the dreams of the land clearing and milling and building I shall be doing in the near future. Yes Geneva is pretty, I can remember the restlessness I suffered in anticipation of moving here, now I am doing the same about my new farm. If anyone likes you can visit my website and see what it is I have been doing for the past two decades www.fishinglakegeneva.com  I look forward to getting out of the boat and into the woods. John

So awesome, I have met two of my new neighbors on this site in just two days. To think that I never would have if it was not for me finding this site. John 8)

UP DATE...Finally have a serious looker at my property here in the south of the state, woman and children moved up 3 weeks ago to the NW and are starting to build residency. They are already living in a rental home in town, 14 miles west of the ranch. I'm still down here running the bait shop and fishing guides. I had planned to stay through Oct. before shutting down and getting busy logging at the farm. May have to make up my mind whats worth more, $ or time. Kids are making it easy on mom with the move, mom has been making fun for the kids by going out to the farm atv riding, setting deer and turkey stands and blinds. Funny Wife called me today because she lost her way in the woods while picking out a home site, told her she needed to head east - to keep the sun on her right, it was noon when the call came in. Couple of minutes and she was back on trail. Any how I hope I don't fold on the price and get whats fare for the place down here, going to be needing the buck$ to do all the stuff I've been waiting a long time for. Worked many long hours building here and my business. If I don't, I'm going to seriously look at reducing price even more. The money I loose here, may have to be an investment in time bought, for my family and for my future. keeping my fingers crossed. John
