Title: Birch, is it worth removing lower young branches?
Post by: MiskisM on February 24, 2015, 12:33:42 PM
It fell to me to manage 2-3 hectares of birch. I am in Lithuania (Baltic states). Recently I removed low value trees and saw that lower branches fell easily with touch (up to 2meters or 6 feet). Is it worth removing those branches, so that lower wood will get extra value after time? (if you gona ask about extra time, yes I have too much of it)

Welcome to the Forestry Forum.

Yes, it is a good idea to remove the lower branches especially if they are dead. Helps the tree to grow over and heal those holes.

If you get a chance to take and post some pics of your trees, it would be much appreciated.
