Title: Pole Barn question
Post by: Haggis on April 30, 2015, 02:51:49 PM
I am thinking about making a wood pole bar shed. My issue or question is the area my land is on is extremely rocky where I can not dig and blasting is not an option so I want to know if I can have a floating lets call it pole barn. What issues would one have with this. My idea would be to set down level cement pads that the pole site on but have the structure itself free standing.

Thoughts concerns?

Sounds like a plan, and as long as you design it so the wind can't lift it and carry it, should be fine.

Also, the design will have to have all the ties to keep it from racking when loaded. Having poles stuck in the ground covers a lot of things having to do with strength of the building. Without that tie, then have to compensate a bit.

Float a slab, and tie your building to that slab. But likely not be a "pole" barn then. :)

haggis,  engineers are always concerned with uplift although one sees many old structures that look like they will fly away in a light breeze.  will your shed have sides or will it be open?

Plan is to be open as it is going to be a wood shed and a drying area for milled wood.

If you are not going with a full floor, it would be a good plan to drill into the rock and have steel anchors placed to protrude from the rock and tie into your cement pads.

My 2 cents. :)

Drilling into the rock might not work either as the rocks are big but for the most part are shattered Canadian shield pieces that range from a few pounds to several hundred pounds with no flat surfaces. .

there are a variety of screw/auger type ground anchors but if the shield rock is every where they probably won't work either.  seems that you need to anchor to the rock some way & drilling is the most obvious.  erecting the building above will be the easy part.
