Saw a maple lace burl board listed on ebay, I was wondering what the lace part is?
Its what we call curly maple or tiger striped maple. Here it is as a knife handle.

It is most common with red maple and yellow birch.
From the pictures I've seen of "lace burl" ( also common in redwood ) it looks like they are composed of lots of small pockets of burl, and the "lace" is the wood between them which is not burled, but twisted enough to give a lacy appearance.
