I'm really confused about this already dead tree I cut up for firewood. I thought it was beech because of the smooth grey bark but now that I look at the grain I thought it was poplar or aspen. But it's dried out and it's still got a good weight and burns nicely so I'm not sure any more. Any ideas? I'd really appreciate it.

Looks like Acer rubrum to me.
Looks like a soft maple, like red or silver maple
Thanks for the help! There's some red maple around that area so that must be it. Thanks!
Some of those maples can have some smooth bark when they are young.
