Title: Big snow coming to the NorthEast
Post by: kensfarm on January 21, 2016, 08:51:06 PM
From DC to Philly the prediction is 2ft+..  gusts to 50mph..  I guess we'll see.  Drove home from work this evening..  gas station was out of gas.. it said they only had premium..  I pumped for 5 minutes and only got .50 cents worth of gas..  I was probably burning more just idling.  Hit the grocery store across the street.. it wasn't a mob scene but the bread shelf looked 1/2 empty.  I just needed cat food and milk.  Last big snow like this..  they even pulled the plow trucks off the road because of the wind.  The road in front of the farm is below the fields.. so it gets filled in.  It looked like this..  I cleared the road to the nearest neighbor's house.. took me 2 days.  No one lives on the farm across the street.

Not snow here, but the storm blasted through like a freight train.  Hopefully there were no damaging tornadoes.  The temperature instantly dropped from 68° to 57° and it continues to steadily drop.

Last I checked, the northern edge of it is only supposed to get up to a line running from the MA/NH line on the coast, sloping down through central MA, to the CT/MA line where it intersects with NY. and following a similar line to the WSW from there (well south of Albany).

I wish some of it were coming further north. We could use some more snow up here.

I'm in Southern PA in the 16-24" predicted area so I got out both snow blowers, aimed them south and hopefully helped push the storm away. I also walked around all the buildings looking for stuff that the blowers shouldn't blow.

When Michael Bloomberg was mayor of NYC he would always ask people to donate blood if it was safe to walk.to their local hospital . 8 million people stuck at home and the local.hospital is out of blood .  Any storm causes blood shortages.

We are in a blizzard warning area and haven't experienced one bit of shortage of milk or bread, or gas lines.  Cowboy Bob went to the grocery this morning and said he didn't think the lines were as long as a normal Friday.

We had about 6" by mid morning so I took the leaf blower and blew me out a path to the road about 70 yards away. When I got near the road our county snow plow driver came by running wide open and covered me with snow and slush. I guess he was mad because he failed to knock my mailbox off the post on his way up like he used to do before I reinforced it. Never stopped to apologize or tell me to kiss his ___ or anything. Where do we get these guys?

Just getting started here in northern Maryland.  Could easily get over 2 feet as we are sorta in the bullseye of this storm.  Hunkered down with Jenny and planning to have a wonderful weekend.   Good thing we get along.  Worried about power outages due to the heavy snow and predicted winds.  Generator has enough fuel for 3 days or so.  If it's a record setter I might as well say I survived it!

We have about 6" right now.  Earlier today I put the blower into the back of my truck so I can unload it right onto the sidewalk and start blowing.  I think I just may wait until about 10AM before I start.  Maybe the wind will be a little calmer.

It is going to be very interesting around here if we get the 24"+ they keep talking about.  Right in the middle of the bullseye!

Yes I have a big wood burning heater and plenty of firewood.

Better than that I have natural gas and several years ago I installed a 1700 KVA Guardian/Generac whole house generator with ATS. Should we lose power 10 seconds later my generator cranks itself and takes over power to the house. Three years ago we had freak summer storms and were without power for 11 days here. Only time my generator was shut down was once to change the oil and a couple of times to check the oil. People with small generators had to worry about where to find fuel which was also in short supply but we never lost natural gas.

I did like the quote from someone in government on the east coast

''We are preparing for the worst storm we have ever seen and we would be very happy to be underwhelmed''

:D

That storm went south of us. However we have had a whole week of teens for lows and 28 to 30 for highs. I am sick of it and ready for something better. The 2'' of styrafoam insulation in the roof of my sawshed seems to hold the cold in all day.

I hope youall in the path of this milk and bread economic upturn are safe and warm.

We still have power, or I wouldn't be here.   :)

Non-drifted areas have the snow over the seats of the lawn furniture.  This is blowing directly from the east, and that is going to be a problem in itself.  Our winds are expected from a westerly direction, so to establish protected areas, trees, wind blocks, and structures are oriented to block a north westerly flow.  Things like calf hutches here have the opening facing east.  The barns themselves are situated to have entrances facing east and south.  Also, our normal drifting patterns are thrown out the window with such an easterly blast.

Having said that, snow is so much easier to deal with than ice.  I refuse to watch the weather channel with it's dramatic hysterics 24/7.   ::)

Finally stoped here. About 12 inches, got the snow plow on the tractor and will begin the task of plowing the mile of dirt road to get to the paved road. Elevation changes about 500 feet in that distance, makes for exciting ride at times. Chains on 4 x4 Kubota 34 hp help keep it in the road. Still not much fun.
Look forward to the day when I can just stay put til it melts. Got to have a outside job  for  now.

I was just out and it's about 14" and coming down hard, poor old dog went a few feet in my tracks and turned around, in a few hours I'll fire up the walk behind blower and make a path, might wait till tomorrow to fire up the Kubota with 50" blower.

Tree Farmer, where are you in Western NC? I sued to work for a plant that made flat steel wire and sold it to a manufacturing company up that way. They made jigsaw blades and small bandsaw blades out of it.  (I'm thinking the name was American Tool, but it's been about 15 years, so i could be remembering it wrong.) I remember back in the late 80s or early 90s asking them if they needed us to throw a few generators on a truckload of wire that was coming their way - they had been hit by a huge storm that knocked out power in a widespread area. All the local sources had sold out of generators.

Hope things are going OK up there, and for everyone else who is getting hammered by this. We'd love to see some of that snow up our way, but it's not coming this far north. (We're used to dealing with it. Even our little town of 2000 owns three good-sized plow trucks.)

The last time we had a storm like this was a few years ago in the middle of March, and like Roxie stated everything here is protected from the west/northwest winds, it too came straight from the east, roughly 3'.  I hope everyone is fairing well out there, we have wind but only a few inches of snow right now, just enough to make everything a pain to get done.

I get tires with big lugs tread for the trucks, I do go to the wood lots I own and it helps. I buy new just before winter and run them all year. And when winter comes again If I don't think they're good I get new ones.
I do change Anns car tires from summer to winters with studs.
She drives around the people with the all weather tires. In the last small storm we had. She went to the store and came back and told me of a driver trying to make a hill.
Said she waited at the bottom for the guy to get turned around. He stopped and told her not to go up the hill. It was bad. :D :D
She went from a stop up the hill and not spin a tire. :D :D

Lots of folks around here switch to snow tires in the winter, and use all-season the rest of the year.  The snows do significantly affect stopping distances on ice and snow as compared to all season.  I never felt the need for them when I lived in NW Ohio, here in VT, it's nice to be able to actually stop when you hit the brakes while coming down a mountain.

A lot of people run winters here, some even stud them, it often hovers around the freezing point when it snows/rains during the winter here on the coast which is worse for traction than colder temperatures, then after things get good and slushy it will freeze up good.

Last year (the worst I have ever seen) I ended up clearing off 4" of ice at two gravel parking lots by using the back bucket on the backhoe.

Saw a neat invention one time where inventor put a container of pine resin over each front wheel. Had a lever like old fashioned choke knob you'd pull and it would spray on the spinning tires giving good instant traction. Environmentally safe and wore off in a mile or so. Never saw it marketed but looked like a good idea in snow and ice country.

Kinda like a train engine sanding the tracks.   ;)

MM,

Exactly. I had forgotten to old trains used to do that on the steep grades.

Sort of backwards from AU/GT pajama parade. In old days the football teams came to town on the train. The night the Ga Tech team were due in someone greased the tracks and the train slid past the station and the GT players had to hoof it back. AU students (since it was past sundown and way past all their bedtimes) came out in PJs to hoot, holler and laugh at them. For many years the day before the AU/GT game they had a pajama parade and freshmen even attended class in pjs. People just don't know how to have a good time any more.

One of the older fellows that I know said that as kid behind his house was a hill that the steam train would run twice a day . He and his friends would find grease wherever they could . then go and grease the tracks and sit and watch the engine spin out .

Running from 16" to 24"+ here yesterday. I walked up to feed our cows and it took me over 3hrs to do what normally takes ~1hr. Dad called wanting to know why it took me so long as some of the neighbors on the high ridges were reporting around 16".   I told him I was wet from my belt down due to drifts and the tractor was useless in this snow. It's hard to roll out 4x5 bales alone in snow halfway up them or more.

We got to use the v10 and pulled a Chevy out of the ditch. He was nervous and it did look bad, but snow is no trouble. Mud is a different story. We then came across another truck getting pulled out by this big jacked up 350. After he pulled him out he must have been excited because he turned around in a field, snow flying and going fast he lost it and slid down the bank and stuck! Gotta love it! Stay safe!

We think we got a little over 2 feet.  Certainly not the worse I've seen.  The blizzard of '58 left drifts to the second story of homes.  We never lost power and haven't heard any reports of power outages.

The National Guard were bringing injured and sick people out to main roads for the ambulance to take them to the hospitals.

We got 5-6 inches here in SE CT near the coast. We just finished digging out.

Followed some cat tracks they went across the road, over the stone wall, across the yard, up a tree, cross the wood pile, then across the back yard.

Probably about 14" still out there. beautiful day except for that. Blew out the drive wide enough for one truck yesterday with my leafblower. Had done so once before second wave hit. Then dug out the mailbox so our mail lady can drive up to it.

Its hard on Sampson, my little rat terrier as the snow is higher than him. He does seem to enjoy jumping around in it. Even a few inches is rough on a small dog, especially males.

Well, while I was typing this my next door neighbor came up on his tractor and bladed out my drive wider and made me a nice turn around spot.

He also graded out at the main road which was a nice community service. I have one of the widest drives in the area and many of my neighbors have to come here to turn around. One just up the way has such a steep angle he can't turn left when exiting so has to come here and turn around and go back out.

Its real nice to have good neighbors.

I'm going to guess about 30" but with all the wind and drifts over 4' it's hard to measure. Spent most of todays daylight hours moving snow and I'm beat, almost like I was getting old, but that surely can't be.

They had 30.2" at the Harrisburg airport.  Avg annual snowfall is 30.6".  It broke the old record snowfall by 5".  Neighboring town is reporting 31".  There are reports in the area up to 37" and saw one outside of Hagerstown, MD of 39".  It took me 3½ hours to open the driveway up.  Normal snowfalls are about ¾ hr.  A lot of the snow has settled and it doesn't look as deep.  The winds weren't too bad in my area, so the drifts were real big.  A 5' drift is at the side of the barn, and that's the worst one.

Glad I don't live in coastal NJ where they had tidal flooding.

For you people thats having problems with plow trucks....
I was down at an eatery that had a lot of plow truck drivers getting there meal.
I was listening to them talk. They said if they slow down for everyone along the road
that was to dumb to stay away from the plow trucks that they would never get anything done.
I heard one say that there boss told them to keep moving. That was the exact word they said.
They have a lot to do and little time to do it.

x2 if i poked along at 5mph i would never get anything done. and everyone likes to complain about there mailbox got hit by the plow. here in maine almost all of the town roads have a right or way of 66ft. 33ft from the center. so all the mailboxs are on town land or state. you put the box up at your own risk

A good plow driver doesn't wipe out mail boxes.. which have to be put where they are so the postal delivery person doesn't have to drive off the road (or they won't deliver). Actually, the mail boxes show where the edge of the roadway is at..  ;D
Plowing snow off the roads isn't easy, I would admit. I do think the plow drivers should have permission to push abandoned cars off the roadway, same as the snow. ;)

assuming they run the same type of trucks and gear as we do here. climb into the drivers seat of a plow truck with a wing on it. can you see the end of the wing  nope its out of sight. if there is a mirror on the wing post that will be the only way to see it. and the rig is 13ft wide so you pull out for a lot of mailboxs until there is a car coming then its the car or the box. hit the car there is lots of paper work with the box none. i dont get many cars left beside the road if there is just call the law and they will tag em and drag em

Read in the local paper today that a 56 year old man in a neighboring town died of carbon monoxide inhalation when a snow plowed went by as he was shoveling out his car.  Apparently he had started the vehicle and was inside when the plow threw enough snow onto his vehicle that he couldn't get out.  I wondered why he wouldn't have turned off the car and sounded the horn?  No cell phone with him to call?

They use a brine solution on all of our roads  (not sure the exact makeup of it), they may use sea water down east  (?), but they don't use sea water in the western part of the state.  This last snow storm they didn't put anything down since it was forecasted to start as rain before it switched over to snow.

That exactly what I meant. In NYC, they are not fussy about whether you are in your way, they just drive right through you. We used to take the train into NYC when I was in college. I grew up in a small Ohio farm/manufacturing town, where you waved and said hi to everyone you passed, whether you knew them or not. It was an eye opener walking in NYC: you'd cross the street, the light would change midway, and the oncoming cars would aim for you.

It's a little different here in VT. If you are waiting to pull in to traffic (or at least what VT'ers call traffic), you only have to wait 2 or 3 cars before someone stops to let you in. If you are standing next to the side of the road and it even looks like you are THINKING of crossing the street, traffic will generally stop and wait for you to cross. When we see someone speed up to keep another car from entering traffic, pedestrians can often be heard muttering "must be from New York".

As far as I've ever heard, in NY there is no spec as to what the mailbox will be mounted on, but it has to be a certain distance from the edge of the road and if you're at that distance, you're golden.

Myself, I got lucky in that Nat. Grid replaced the power pole in front of my house and they planted the new one next to the old one (1½') and we cut the old one off, "mailbox height", so it worked out pretty good!

So true.  I was born in Southern California and our family moved to NY when I was 11.  I finished up Community College and moved to Sacramento for my 4-year degree.  I came back that first summer to work in "the City" with my dad.  It was ingrained in me from birth - cars stop for you to cross the street  :D :D  My first day "on the job" I go out to lunch with my dad.  As I stepped off the curb, he grabbed my shoulder and yanked me back.  A city bus was blowing through the red light and would have taken me out. :o

ljohnsaw that was a close one!  I was driving in nyc once and there was a merge.  Well a cheese bus wanted to cut me off, he started going and once he hit my mirror i backed right off and let him go the busses are the worst.  Guy I know been working in nyc all his life, he said he used to drive a stake rack truck in the city.  Well if a bus driver ticked him off, he'd go right beside it, get the busses mirror stuck in his stake rack, and slam on the brakes.  Said it'd rip the mirror right off.  He said that then the bus could not travel any further.  A bus cannont drive without a mirror in the spots they have to be.  Then they have to bring a new bus in and transfer all the passengers...nice place huh
