I have my building set that I am going to build. What I need to do now is figure out the pavilion part I want to have for some shelter for the pig roast. The building will have large doors on the corners that can be opened so there is inside area there as well. The polebarn will have ten foot side walls.
The pavilion I want to be Timberframe. Either square or log. Just do it fits the Forestry Forum in looks. What I am wondering is, is it possible to build a 24' by 12' frame, that has a 24' span. I have attached a rendering doen in photoshop to show why I want 24'. I'd rather it be free standing from the building. It can go right up next to it, but don't want to deal with conjoining the roofs.

I've crossed a timber framed covered bridge with a span of over 200 feet between piers so I'm sure with the right design for a truss and the right sized timbers 24 feet for a pavilion could be done Jeff. I'll leave the design work to an engineer though. :)
Furby came up with a pretty obvious solution to the span.

What's the snow load for your area?
Jim Rogers
Most of the county, including our township is 40. The others are at 50. The new building will have a 4/12 pitch and a steel roof. The steel will certainly help with shedding snow.
I went 24' with a 8x10, R Oak beam and it's on the eve side. That end would be easy I think, Maybe.

With a 4/12 pitch, there won't be a lot of snow shedding. I've seen 12/12 hold on to a lot of snow before it lets go. Adding the posts will help. We'll see what Jim comes up with for you. ;)
The neighbors behind me have a 3/12 pitch dark colored steel roof, and it doesn't take much sun in the winter to get the snow moving.
Jeff your right on . almost every building I have seen go down had a white roof .
Are you going to need drawings in order to get building permit?
Jim Rogers
I dunno. I'd imagine. This is phase two of the building project. :)
