Title: Finish or not to finish bench for shower
Post by: bucknwfl on March 19, 2016, 07:04:13 PM
I built my wife a bench for the shower from popular. It turned out great for what it is. The wood is about 12% mc. It will be wet and swell somewhat if left unfinished or should I treat it like a boat and coat with epoxy???

Thanks

Buck

Buck,
I would paint the heck out of that poplar. In my experience poplar does not hold up well with water. I've replaced a lot of poplar exterior trim and cornice on houses.

if you want it to survive in the shower, i would recommend epoxy or paint.

I would finish it and put some plastic blocks on the bottom of it to get it up off the floor so air can circulate under it to keep mold from growing on the bottom. :)

"In the shower".  Do you mean in the bathroom near the shower or actually in there with the water and shampoo and necked people?  I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but..... Poplar and water will be a problem.  If you have to make another, look into a wood called Ipe.

I was curious to see if anyone would just say "use it while it works."  Poplar does not last when in ground contact but in the shower how log would it last?  Would it blossom with mold?  You made a simple bench with available material is it supposed to last for a century?

Is it going in the shower stall proper or just a place to sit and trim toe nails (if ladies do such things?...I don't think I have ever seen my wife clip her toenails....I digress ;D)

I'll say it:  Nice bench!  If it works for a few months or a few years and wife is happy, congratulations.  Someday it will be on the back porch holding up a flower pot and it will work just fine there as well.

Sincerely,

KDerby
