We have an existing building with poles every 10'. Are plans are to cut beams to fit in between the poles and start about a foot and a half off the ground with the first beam and go up. They will be fastened to the poles with two long steel plates one on the inside and one on the out side.
We can't decide on what wood to use. Are first thought was red cedar and are second thought was beatle killed pine from South eastern OK. Now we have access to alot of big cottonwood. We have had a lot off experience with Cottonwood. But only for oilfield blocking and trailer floors. I now that it likes to twist and turn. Would you put it up green? Or would dried be better? Or would you not use it at all?

Welcome to the forum Sawlogger. Cottonwood would probably be the last choice because it rots quickly. However up off the ground and used inside it should last. If  i was to use cottonwood it would be fastened down when green because when it dries you can't hardly nail it. Someone will come along with more detailed answers than I have shortly.   

We use it alot in sheds , barns of the ground. But I have seen it cut and turn green from being so wet it molded. Me personally I wouldnt be scared to cut it and install it but I would keep the building unsealed for a couple months till its fairly dry.  I have only experience with pole barn, lean toos etc. With it for construction.  My 2c free of charge

Thanks for all the helpful replys. I think we are leaning towards red cedar now.

We replaced are old Mill with a new Timberking 2000 a little over a year ago. And we still have an old Medows circle mill for sentimental reasons

Just cut up a cotton wood for utility wood (building firewood racks etc.).  It's a shame, it' s a pretty color and very pretty planed.
