Trucking logs into Indiana today I came to a intersection and there was construction on the road and they had a flager directing traffic. But in stead of directing he was texting, a car was setting in the center of the intersection not knowing what to do. When I left home this morning there building a condo south of me in this town. A fellow was standing on the foundation texting I wonder how much time employers lose to this. I guess theres a time and place for texting but on the jobs not one of them in my opinion.
Yes it looks like they are texting but they are actually Posting here on The Forestry Forum
Red,
So that was you directing traffic? :D :D
i saw some where it is estimated they lose two hours per eight hour work day to texting. i fired a guy for it.
After the guy ran over the duck boat in Philadelphia and killed 2-3??? People a few yrs ago all the boat companies have strict anti cell phone policy while on watch. I keep mine on me all the time but there is a time and place for it.
I help auctioneers out part-time by running won items to the winners. One auctioneer had his grandson helping, he couldnt have been but 9-10 years old.
Well, it was his turn not far into the auction and there he was texting. I gave his father credit, he quickly corrected the situation, and I will say it was an old school correction.....
Well today is national selfie day . Now what's Next ?
I see this with police officers the most, state and local. Had one state police officer behind a phone truck (there were two more in front ??) By my house last year. I pulled up behind him and waited a couple of minutes for direction. Finally his window went down and he stuck his hand out and waved me by. This was on the crest of a hill and I cogent see over it. Just as I pulled by another car was coming over the hill, having been signaled by the other trooper. ::)
I know someone who was a police chief in another town that really liked to crack down on rent a cops that didn't get out of their cars or were using their phone white directing. More than one trooper was called back to the barracks over that.
People at rita's work go to the restroom all day to read their txts.

15 seconds on the air (horns) would at least feel good ;D
then just a big smile when the dink gives you the finger.
It's almost the whole country. There going to spend there whole lives glued to a 2x3" screen. Heck with that, I'll spend my time in the woods.

X2
The woods where we work, nobody is on their cell phone--there's no signal! :D :D :D
I rented a 450j for a big job last fall, I found a phone charger plugged in to the power outlet when I got there. Quickly made sense why there wasn't much on the landing.
He never did ask how it got cut in half though.
My wife spends about all night on her's. On it from the time I get home till I go to bed. She bought my boy a ipad, and it didn't take me long to hide that one. I'm glad he is 4 and already wanting to go hunting, we are going to start out with squirrels this fall.
I was stopping for a red light last week in a empty log truck last week and got rear ended by a young man while he was texting. Luckily no one was hurt but he banged up the front of his Pickup pretty good.

It's only lucky no one was hurt if he learns and stops doing that. If he doesn't and kills somebody, I wouldn't call it lucky.
The title reminds me of a conversation with my wife last weekend. We were in the big city for a night and watched an elderly couple with a map out planning their drive.
Now I have grey hair (but lots of it 8) ), and am not afraid of paper maps. I'm comfortable with all kinds from topos to more complex forest management plans and land use maps etc.
Most of the "tappy generation" are scredoodled if their batteries die and their googleificationmaps don't load. They just sit their wondering where they are and how they're going to get to the next place. Kinda funny but kinda pitiful that we've lost some of the basics along the way.
Engima t120your exactly right. I hope that little bump woke him up. But I'm glad he didn't hurt himself or me and my son. I just wish they was some way that you couldn't text while driving I see it every day and it scary.

My boss communicates with us almost entirely via text. the idea being that instead of having us stop work to answer the phone. we can read our messages when where have a moment. it may look like we are texting all the time but we are ordering materials, parts, equipment...
My last boss would text everybody every night with directions for the next day. One other hand and I both told him we bought our phones to talk on not read, so if he typed instead of talked, we didn't get his messages period.
The last 2 and a half weeks I have been on the missile defense sight, absolutely no phones, no cb's or company radios, infact no communication of any kind, it has been kind of refreshing.
We have a NO texting law here in Ohio but for what I see it's not worth the paper it is written on. About like the same law no open containers in a vehicle and you see people buying a giant can of beer and drink it on there way home from work, then throw the empty out along the road. Always wondered why the cops didn't set up a few blocks from a carry out and do a random pull overs.
It's to bad the car makers can't add a blocker as soon as the motor starts ::) .
^They can, and they could, but sales would be affected, so they won't.
...Until they're compelled to, as with 3pt seat belts, airbags, and third brake lights.
Texting is the new smoking.

For most of the summer while in in the trees we don't get cell service either. Love it! We just use our phone for music! helps give rhythm and break up the noise of the equipment
Bought 2 smartphones last summer for the wife and I..
I have created a texting emailing facebooking monster.
Guess which one of us this is?
Last night in bed until well past 11PM.
The non poster went out to the recliner to try to get to sleep.
So many people are addicted to their phones. I see police officers who are supposed to be directing traffic texting. What did we ever do when we actually had to talk to people?
If ISIS wants to cripple this country all they have to do is blow up a few cell towers and the young would not be able to function. I have seen them walk right into a wall while playing on their phones. I remember the days when you picked up a phone a voice would say, "operator" or "number please". How the Hell did we survive? lol

so true pete I'm in the same boat as you could never get her to stay up after 10pm even if we went out know its 1 -130 am and still up :( :(
I think the phone manufactures , could program movement at a certain speed that would shut down the texting feature .

When we are logging we don't have any cell service, we do have cb 's to communicate to the loader though.
When I haul freight north, it is 450 miles between service, just cb's and big radios for communication. I do carry a satellite phone for emergencies anymore though.

They could still make a call with the texting shut down or text while the vehical was stopped at a station ,ETC .
Lots of guys are getting divorced that I know of because of the phone or what it leads to.
My log truck driver for instance. His wife said he never talked to her anymore. He said how could I you're always on the phone!
My wife gets pist when I tell her to get off the phone, but it needs to be done. I've found better ways to get her off of it because I fear she will go down the same path. I'm not saying the constant facebooking and phone use is an end all but it sure doesnt help when there are underlying issues to deal with that don't get dealt with. Fuel for the fire.
It is a strange addiction and really dangerous.
And a lotta wives are thinking right now "when will my man get off that dang ForestryForum and pay attention to me???"
:D
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) heard that before :D :) :) :) :) :)

I think a lot of wives and children , would get way more of our time , if they would put the phone down .
My buddy's wife's phone was beeping in the middle of the night so he start'd to read then filed for a divorice in the morning ;D ;D
We are loggers by nature and at best , we spend little time with our wives , I'm on my third , all seems well , I can look at her phone anytime I want . We have had some hard times , when I'm away for a couple months on a job , mostly because we have six children together , in our combined family . we hac=ve been married for 10 years , my first wife was my fault , I worked way too much , and also worked way too much away from home it lasted 8 years and was my fault with out question . The second was a different story 14 years and four children latter , I got my children and full custody . The third is a charm .
If Sweet-pea spends too much time on facebook just sign up and chat with her that way. A fella needs to be flexible....
