Title: A bad week with big losses.
Post by: gaproperty on October 19, 2016, 07:55:59 AM
I posted this video on Facebook  hoping to encourage low impact select cut logging. Instead what happen I believe is an (admin edit)logger with big equipment seen on Facebook the road and wood, went to the land owner and provide quick short term gain to her. She is now handing over her beloved property to the logger.

I spent 2 years carefully cutting my way through poor wood and building a road to make it to the back of the property where there is 80 acres of good wood. The week I made it to the good wood she hands over the property to the big logger. Maybe it was her that contacted the logger but either way it is my loss.

Not only did I loose my woodlot but my video I posted with good environmental intention will create more destruction by a big contractor.  At last but not least  I had to put two of our cats down yesterday. It has been a tuff week. https://youtu.be/JrdLwW8GYiQ (https://youtu.be/JrdLwW8GYiQ)

This always sticks in my head when I hear things like this happening...folks with good intent like "ga"  takin the hit for all the wrong reasons...

Well sometimes we'd travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill

And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry, my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

And the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man

kinda sorta the same deal...Sorry Sir for being a victim and all your good intents  floundered.

I used to listen to Jim and Jessie sing that song.  A local Forester, for years, used to make suggestions to my dad on how to manage his timber and offered to help.  One day a logger came by and made an offer to clear cut and he took it.  The land looked like a battlefield afterwards.  Dad's comment was that the Forester was trying to beat him out of his money.  Like the logger didn't.

Man, that sucks.  My guts truly go out to you.  One of the worst feelings is what you just described.  Working so hard, always with integrity and nobody but you really knows all the trials and tribulations.  Just to have some egghead with big stuff swoop in and not even know or care, taking it all for granted.  It's all a test, right?

A contract can be your best friend.

I've had many a job where it looked good when we were done, only to find a logger came in and hogged it up.  I stopped marking timber and went into working mills.  A lot less headaches and heartaches.

I remember one consultant saying, landowners deserve the kind of management they get.

That stinks.

I have seen that sort of thing happen many times; someone with good intentions posts their progress on a public forum and get lots of grief as a result.

Sorry about your cats. Injury or just their time?

Sorry for you but people post way too much on face book, I don't look at or post on anything other than a forum like this and then I'm careful what I post here.

I agree with the FaceBook issue, too many people put way too much personal information out there for the world to see!!

That does stink! They say money is the root of evil! Sorry to hear about the kitty's. Nice job with the video and best of luck finding a new lot and someone who will appreciate your hard work and good job.

I am sure it had nothing to do with your video. Bigger forestry operations are always actively looking for property to harvest. My advise is to always have a written contract/land lease in regards to harvesting. best of luck.

Yes this was my fault.  The owner didn't want a contract or sell me the property but only promised me first chance to buy or manage the woodlot.  The property is a neighbouring property so 5 minutes from my door step. I took my chances on her word.  I broken even so not all is lost.  Thanks for the good advice.
