Title: New Sawmill shack
Post by: fishfighter on April 17, 2017, 11:55:46 AM
I started this rebuild/build a couple months ago. The building was a free building that I had to move to my place a couple miles away. Well, sometimes free is not all that good. ::)

Once I got the building in place, I had to saw some 6x6x16'. Installed them under to give the building some floor support. Floor joists were 2x6's. :( The building is 14'x 16' wide.

The siding, it's live edge oak. I now have all that done. Installed another window, a regular door on one side and a 5' open that I will install a barn door that will slide on tracks that will be open to the sawmill bay.

Coming off the building, I will be building a section that will be 16' wide and 30' long.

The post will be 6x6's out of oak. Friday, I went and looked at some power poles. They were way to big. Stopped by the lumber company and asked if they had any 6x6's that were damaged. Came away with a couple 8's. Paid a big $7 each. ;D They have some more that I will be picking up. ;D Anyway, sawed them in half then put them on the sawmill and sawed them up like this.

After doing them, I put some 6x6x12' oak beams back on the mill and sawed them on the end to match the treated 6x6's. From there, I applied some roof tar in between the oak and the treated and bolted them together.

I have to do 4 more like them.

The bays that will be coming off the main building will be set on one side, 12' and then 18'. The 18' span is were I will be having the mill set up at and I will be able to load thru there.

I was going to saw up a beam to span that 18', but the size is longer then what I can mill. :( So I started building a header today. This is 15"x18' and is made of oak 2x6's. I will be gluing some 1/2" plywood to the sides. I hope it strong enough for the span.

Now if only the rain would stop for a couple days. Got some heavy down pours the last two with a lot more to come. :(

running-doggy  The header should work if the dog can figure out a way to get it up there!   ;D

That is my old pup. Only thing she can climb is her food bowl. :D She is 11 years old and as my grandson says, "she is broken". Was hit by a car over 8 years ago. >:( She still gets around. ;D

Installed plywood to one side of that header. Raining now.

I have 4 of the post set in the ground. There is nothing good working in mud.

Did the mistake of driving my backhoe over a spot that I dug up a stump. >:( Ended up having to dig out the backhoe. And yes, that is the stump. :)

Do you have any information on what you used and how you built that header. I like that alot and may do the same thing for my shop build.

I stepped in one of my filled stump holes a few days back. Rolled my ankle over and sprained it really bad. I'm finally getting back to limping around slowly👎 I'm watching your progress here closely, I need to put up a saw shed myself and I'd like to get started on it soon.

It is all framed out of 2x6's. This one is 15" wide by 18' long. I did the outside frame, then came back sawing boards at a 45 degree angle. I started installing them at the ends and worked my way to the center. You do want to make sure all the center boards are the same. If one is longer then the rest, that will throw everything off. I did install some 1/2" plywood that is glued and screwed on.

Oh, DanG rain again this afternoon that came down in buckets. :( I'm trying to get this building up before the summer heat hits.

Mt plans change a bit. I will be building another header like the first. I will be building some headers that will go across. I planning on installing a rail system and will need extra support.

Fishfighter- I can tell you why you are having a problem with mud- your dam is too low.  Just increase the height of the pond dam by 2'; this will cause your entire yard to become pond, thus solving your mud problem.  Sometimes it is the simple things that are staring you in the face that are hard to see.

After that, just float that nice new header over to the bay and I'll swing by in my john boat and pull it up to Virginia.  See...waste not want not.

On a serious note (I hate to do it) that is a nice looking header.  Made me look at some engineering tables.

Also, I am not an engineer but does that header have enough support moving the load to the post?  If so that is an interesting trick.

I don't have any snow load here as y'all have to build that into your buildings. I will be adding some 6x6's at a 45 degree angle from the post up to the bottom of the header. That is the reason I didn't cover up one side with plywood yet. I will be bolting in the 45's. Once that is done, I will add more plywood to the other side. That will beef up that header even more. Another reason as to why I didn't install plywood was I needed a way to bolt the header to the post. I installed three 1/2" bolts per side. The roofing, I will be building truss for that.

When I installed the header, I made the mistake of dropping the backhoe boom down hard on the header. Just knew something screwed up, but nothing happen. :o I mean I put down a lot of force. :o Yep, was a dumb out on my part. ;D

MM, my dear wife gave me that new toy because a couple weeks ago I showed up at the house all bloody busting my butt loading a log and my cant hook didn't hold. ;D

I remember a plywood box header pamphlet, maybe on apawood.org. Lots of nails, something like 3" centers on them. Screws tend to be brittle where nails are ductile steel. An LVL solves those kind of span problems easier and better in snow country.

Here's an old thread;

Nice header, I don't think that thing is going anywhere, especially with the plywood.  Over built is an understatement IMO

Thanks Don, going to read up on that.

Got the second header done today. Kind of cool out there for the glue to dry, so I will hang it tomorrow.

Oh, the screws thru the plywood are just to suck up in bind the plywood and glue.

Look around you at old school bridges. That should give you ideas as to how things work when they bolted them together before concrete.

Well this project has been sitting on the back burner. :(

been sawing up true 2x6's for the rafters. Yes green SYP and heavy, but got a start back on this project today. ;D Pre cut everything on the ground and hung everything in the air. :o Really hard doing this all by yourself, but I got this done today.

As far as the tresses, they were fine. No sagging. ;D

Reason as to why I installed the ceiling joist like I did was because I will be installing a Ibeam that will have a trolley system to run on. Also, it is way high enough that I can use and park my backhoe under it.

There will be extra bracing in the future. That is all planed out. All other trusses will be built on the ground and lifted up with my backhoe.

Also, my take using green SYP. I used it in the pass and found that as it dries and shrinks, everything gets even tighter. ;D Only real problem besides a little mold is that it's extra heavy. In fact these boards I sawed over a week ago had lost a bunch of water weight in that time.

Ummm, just so we don't take that and run the wrong way with it. A nail driven into green wood, that then dries, loses 30% of its' lateral shear strength and 75% of its withdrawal strength. Ring or spiral shanks or Ardox nails help especially in withdrawal.

Got out early this morning and was hopping to get the rafter trusses done today. Just super hot to start with. :o Got 5 out of the 8 that I need done and then the skies open up. :( Kind of sad, but it was at the point I would do one and then have to take a 15 minute break. :o I still have to install the center piece. Going to get that done maybe tomorrow along with the other three I need to build.

Once all up and the roof over it, I will bleach the heck out of it. ;D

Still have a bunch of bracing to be done. Used a lot of scrap lumber just to hold things in place that has to be replaced. Hoping I can go pick up the metal roofing next Monday or some time next week. Also I still have to jack up the building to match and install new rafters to match the roof line. Got to run a power line to it also.

We get thunderstorms here nearly every afternoon and very little rain with them. Got a bit more done on the shack. Just have to install some hurricane straps and then start installing the roof. If I can get my SIL over today, I should have the roof on.

The opening on the sides has a 9' clearance and on the far end has a 13'6" clearance. I will have no problem getting my backhoe in or loading logs from the sides.

I have a roof over my head. ;D DanG phone is full, so no pictures as of now.

I will be jacking up the building part to match the top of the header. From there, I will reframe all new rafters to match the roof lines and installed a new roof on the building.

Still pushing myself and got the building moved over and raised to match headers. Super hot again today and call it a day before noon. Still have to level the building, just maybe tomorrow.

Sawed up more lumber for the new roof line over the building.

Today was a off with the old and a start to the new.

Old roof line.

Got to HOT by noon time. Had to pick up all my tools that I had there due to just in case if it rains tomorrow. In fact, this is the dry record September here ever. :o Less then one drop of rain here all month. :o We did need it some, but the dust is getting out of hand.

Oh. by the way, my dear wife thinks I broke my left wrist. :o Was knocking up some rafter roof strappings with a 8lb maul and my wrist made contact to a board first. ::) got a ice pack on it and yes, it hurts like forty kinds of hell. :D

fishfighter,
I lost my daughter 12 years ago, just shy of her 26th birthday. The pain gets easier but the sense of loss is always there. To have the ability to go out and build something was great therapy for me.Be careful out there,it's not always easy to keep your mind on your work.

I'm glad you got better with the pain level and I hope it stays getting better and you don't have lasting problems.  Chronic pain changes a person.

If it makes you feel any better:  I've got a bone chip floating around in an ankle from being pushed off the back of a trailer and rolling my ankle when I landed.  That ankle looks funny to this day, like a permanent swelling but doesn't give me any trouble.  It was mostly all better in 2 weeks after it happened.

I'm 4 1/2 years past the time the doctors told me and my dear wife I had less then 6 months to live. Hindsight, I think I would of died been much better. I just don't know. Maybe the Good Lord has plans for me. Just wish and pray he would let me know them.

I did get a little done today. Had to stop due to that DanG wrist.

Setting the rafters on 24" center. They are true 2"x6". Once I have them all in place, I will remove ceiling joist two at a time, flip them ( they are sagging). They are 2x6', spanning 16'. Not good. :( I will double them up and hope that should fix that problem. Most likely tie them on center to the rafters too. That should fix any sagging in the future.
Title: Re: New Sawmill shack

Yup, tie them to the rafters which will essentially make a truss.

Got some more work done and just about ready for  the roofing. Once I added the joist strong back down the center, that stiffing everything up. Thank God for C clamps. A lot of the ceiling joist had a lot of twist in them. The people that built the building for sure didn't know what they were doing. There is nothing square in it. Had to custom cut each rafter. >:( Some times "free" is not good. :o Didn't get any pictures, But I will today.

Started at the crack of daylight. Was nice and then the heat kicked into high gear. Quit at 11am. Had to jump on the lawn mower to cut up DanG leaves. Grass cracks under your feet when you walk in the yard. Still not a drop of rain all month. :o

Just about finished the roof.

Still have to box in the end eves and install the capping.

The bad/good thing today is that there is a 70-80% chance for rain. We having had a drop in over 30 days now. :o

At this point, I have less then $500 invested into this build. Most of that cost was for the metal roofing and screws. ;D Already have all kinds of wire and a breaker box that my son picked up off of jobs that they were going to throw away.

On a side note. For those that own a Woodland Mill. What ever you do, keep all the nuts and bolts on the track system clean of saw dust. My internet service is real slow. >:( But I will try to get one up for you. By using the power wheel chair controller which is 24v, I use two 12v lawn tractor batteries. On the motors, the gearboxes can be shifted in and out of gear. That is how I am able to control each motor for what they do.

Cost wise, I think at this point I have around $300.

In the future, I will be swapping out the controller. Member Kbeitz did a great write up on what is need to swap everything over to a 12V system. 8)

I like it too! ;D I did have a couple that had split. I will try some chinking to fill in and then spray some clear log sealer on the building. That should help it last longer.

Kind of been under the weather. Got out this morning and frozen my butt off. Was only 47f with a stiff wind. >:( Guess my blood is to thin.

I just kind of took it easy and built some steps and built a sticker box. I use 24" stickers. Reason, I stack all my lumber on 8"x16" cinder blocks. I use 26" -36" tin roofing panels to cover the lumber. It is so much easy for me to move things around in this size bundles with my tractor. ;D

Once I was happy with that, I need to set up the hangers to hang my old pirogue to get it out the weather. Dang thing is over 45 years old. ;D Using some bike cycle hangers that have pulleys from Harbor Freight, done.

Fixing to do a add on to the other side of the shack. ;D

Between weather and under the weather, today I started the lean to. Got the post up and the header. DanG NW wind was blasting. My old bones are hurting somewhat. :( Dang cold front pushing hard down here.

Looking good FF.  I'd like to get a roof over my sawbed, but it is still way down the list.  Did you make the lean to specifically for the tractor?

Yes, I did. The old shack I had it at, I had to take it down due to a power line I had installed to the guest house I built. Power company told me it was to close and I told them I would remove it. I had reused all the lumber to build this lean to. Cost me less then $50 for nails bolts and roof screws. ;D

Got the siding up. ;D Them boards are heavy. :o Green oak that are about 18"-20" wide and they were 9' long. Did all the cutting up on the roof.

Is this a bad thing when your wife calls your saw shack "cute"? :D

Going to start wiring it up today. I have everything that is needed that was free. ;D

Very nice Paul, very nice indeed, and if "she" says that it is cute, then wear it with pride!   8)

Lynn, you back home? I think you brought back cold weather with you. :( Had ice on the windshield here this morning. :(

One thing about the South; you will freeze for a couple of days and then it will be back up into the 80's.   :o

I was colder yesterday than I ever was in Colorado, but I was also wearing insulated clothes in Colorado.   ;D
