Got the log arch finished up today other than painting. Took it out to see just how well it would work. Hauled 2 cedar logs in with it and it worked great. The winch worked really good and didn't struggle at all. I'm going to make a few changes now that I've seen it with a log on. My front bars to keep the log from moving around needed to be longer. And now i can make my chains the right lengths. All in all a great project that worked out well.
That looks like it would handle a pretty big log. Nice .
I think your going to like that....
I always have to tear my eyes away from from that nice tractor.
Nice arch that will really be handy. Looks like you did a real nice job building it.
Mark
Thanks guys. Its not perfect but it will get the job done. I will be mostly using it to haul in cedar logs about the size of the 2nd log I brought in. I will use it bringing in fire wood logs too so i don't have to handle the wood so many times.

I really like that little tractor. Don't know how I did without it. Its nice not having to borrow the neighbors tractors anymore. I've done quite a few upgrades to it that have improved it greatly.
Did you add power steering to that little Ford?

Good job, 8)
Good work paints over rated then if you want to add something later you have to grind it off :). Having your own tractor is a lot nicer then borrowing I've down a lot of things the hard way so I don't have to borrow. What are your plans with the cedar ?
My logging stuff don't get no paint. The metal I use is prepainted,I think it's called Rusted Brown. :D
Looking at the first pic I think it would be nice to make some type of cable system that connects to the 3 pt hitch for lifting the front of the log. I don't know whether it be helpful or a hindrance. But I like to come up with crazy ideas that nobody thinks will work :)
I do like the arch to :)

its a 8n ford
sublime,I have a '54 too. My Father had 9n,I think, than traded it in for the '54,both was bought new. He like the '54 because it was a little bit bigger. I think the jubilee was only made in '53. All I know is he always said this one is a NAA. And I think the only difference between the 53' and '54 is the emblem on the hood. But only really guessing on that part.
thecfarm,
I'm pretty sure the one I use is a 54 Ford Jubilee at least that is what I was always told.
I know my Grandpa bought it new and it has always been in the family.
Doesn't get used much now and the Carb needs a good cleaning as it wont stay running very long at the moment.
next time I get a chance I'll ask my dad and find out for sure the information on the one we have.
Brought a couple logs in this evening with the arch. Found a couple dead red oaks. I had to back down and cut the log arch pretty sharp to get on the first one. Got kinda dark on the second log.

one behind a 4 wheeler or utv would be real handy. My 8n does pretty good but at times a smaller setup would be nice.
Somewhere on here someone has a post about a small one for behind a
4-wheeler. Very small and it seemed to work good. I want to make a smaller
one. The one I made is huge. The only worry I have is taking a log down a
hill when the log weights more than my 4-wheeler.
My son built one for a guy a couple of years ago to be pulled with an atv. This was just for firewood logs and only held up the front end of the log. The design was different, it had walking beams and two atv type tires on each side, if you drove through a ditch or rut, the walking beams would allow the wheels to flip and keep going. I never saw it used, but the guy he built it for claimed it worked well and as he intended.
Mine isn't as big as kbeitz but it hauls and pretty good size logs. This one was 14ft. Not sure how heavy.

You can get a good idea of the weight by clicking on the Red Toolbox on the left.
I already cut it up and didn't measure it. I figured I would have to know how big on little end and big end and length
You stated that it was 14' so if it was ~16" diameter and Red Oak the weight would be ~1200 lbs., just for example.

would that be a green log? This one was dead
I would measure the diameter of the heartwood and go from there. The heartwood would be somewhat dryer and the sapwood much dryer so it might average out with a green log. You would be mighty close.
That Red Tool Box on the left has several goodies in it. :)

Hey sublime, that is a mighty fine looking tractor!!!! My Fathers always sat out side,he pushed rocks with that front bumper,I think only one cross piece is there.the rear fenders got banged up form hauling log wood on a trailer and turning to tight.

In doing a history check the ford jubille was first introduced with a few made in late 1952. The true golden jubille was a 1953 model marking 50 years of manufacturing tractors. In 1954 it was just a jubille. The serial number on a 1953 is on the engine block just above and slightly behind the govenor spring. The serial number on a 1954 is on the top flat spot on the bell housing just behind the starter about an inch in from the side. Its stamped into the casting. Its hard to see unless you scrape and sand the old paint and grime. Their is a lot of data on the net for any of these old tractors. The jubille also goes by the model name Naa. I have restored and used three of them over the last 50 years just selling my last one two years ago. Ford went to a number series in 1955. One of the best ford tractors ever built in its class. serial number NAA1-NAA 77474 is a 1953. 77475-128965 is 1954. All of my info comes from Dennis Carpenter ford tractor restoration parts located in concord NC. Jack
I bought what I was told was a jubilee. It had a tag on the front that said 400.
Whats the difference?
Years ago a lady rancher brought a n model ford in and wanted me to get it running. It had a v8 in it, I don't remember if it was a 60 or 90, but V8 none the less. I didn't have time and didn't really want to be working on something that had been thrown together on the farm, so didn't even pay it much attention.
Some years later a friend of mine retired from ford down in the hill country and ask me to be on the lookout for a n model with a V8 in it, he wanted to restore one.
It seemed ford built 80 of them for the government to pull planes with and they were all sent to New Mexico. Oh yea, they also had airplane rear tires on them, so did the one that the rancher had, so I figured it was probably the real deal.
Kbeitz, I have never heard of a 400 model. In the mid 6os ford came out with the 4000 It had a hi-lo two range four speed tranny.
Starmac, The old ford flathead v8s I believe would bolt up to the bellhousing direct, same starter. I've seen several at the florida flywheelers tractor shows over the years. Really neat and powerful.
Funk Aircraft Company of Kansas made a conversion kit for dealers to install a Ford V-8 into 8N's. I grew up using my dad's 8n, (with the stock 4 cylinder). They are quite handy in the woods, though don't overload it. I remember trying to tow a junk car with it once, and seeing nothing but sky when the chain went tight!

I too love the ol ford tractors, my first one was a 8N that someone hit a dead furrow with a loose or missing gas cap and she went up in flames. I got her cheap and dolled her up and had her running in no time, called her Bernie!, next 8N was from a marina and the only work she ever did was move boats around, had a ball on front , hitch in back a good parade or museum piece but I took her to the woods and fields and ran her hard. Now I got a 641 workmaster I think , I looked up the serial number once, she aint pretty and now that I have a new Mahindra she's being neglected.I gotta learn how to post pics.

so some color and then the mid point log brace any other changes that you made!
its looking really nice and it'll be hard to misplace it now with that color!
Thanks guys. The changes were the mid leg brace and the mount for the winch control box. the brace I had in the middle was to light weight and got bent easy and it was to high. sometimes it would let the back of the log drag. I still have to put my secure chains on the middle brace. Im going to also add a roller in the middle to keep the cable from dragging on the top. I like this design better and can't wait too try it out. But looks like a bunch of rain this week.

2-3. I doubt it looks that good for long. That paint isn't the best for durability. Mostly did it to keep from rusting
I really want to do my mill in yellow but I am concerned about how many coats it will take to make it look good. That is why I asked.
Yellow is a translucent color, to get best opaque coverage paint your frame white, and then topcoat yellow. Or if you want the color to "pop" :o (stand out bright), paint it bright metallic silver first, then yellow. (Old hot rod car trick.)

the john Deere yellow paint is good paint.. Very durable but spendy
X2 John Deere yellow - I repainted my old backhoe with it, and turned out great with just a brush and roller. IIRC $75 a gallon, plus I used the JD "Buff" primer (light colored) underneath.
X3 John Deere yellow... Good stuff.

My thought was to maybe mount a rubber roller on the snatch block and it could just roll up and down the bar. Any ideas?
The roller looks like it will work very nicely.
Boat trailer rollers work good
That roller works ok. I have another i could put on the front side. But I think one mounted on the snatch block itself would be better
How about taking a section of 4" plastic pipe (CPVC so the sun does not degrade it or poly pipe) split in half to act as a trough. Or even pass it through the full pipe.
Thats an option. I got a roller I'm going to try out. Got a few rain days ahead to tinker with it
