Does anyone have a clue what this is? It popped up in one of our flower gardens. Not something we planted. It's pretty cool looking, but I'm a bit worried about alien looking pod plants that just sort of appear from nowhere

We call them Japanese lanterns.  I have them near my front steps because they remind me of the house I grew up in. They are very ....shall we say aggressive about spreading.

Physalis alkekengi

AKA - bladder cherry, Chinese lantern, Japanese-lantern, strawberry groundcherry, or winter cherry.

The fact that it appeared on its own, provides insight  to its invasive nature.
