Tom

Today, I was sawing some cherry.  It is awful hot and found myself being very uncomfortable.  I left the engine on the sawmill (Kubota) idling and went to the water spigot and sat in the shade a little while.

When I returned to the mill and revved it up, it wouldn't rev.  Black smoke poured out of the exhaust and the engine knocked like crazy.  I was immediately very concerned. :D

I checked the filter and fuel for water.  Siphoned some trash from the bottom of the tank and was not fixing the problem.

There was a hissing noise that I'd never heard before coming from the engine somewhere, so I climbed up on the mill and found that the inside of the muffler (glass fibers) had come loose and plugged the exhaust.  I got some pliers and screwdrivers, and while the throttle solenoid was engaged, I stood in the midst of the black smoke and plucked at the trash.  It would come out in great hunks, blowing black silt all over me and scattering pieces of glass fiber everywhere.  The muffler was turned into a cannon and this stuff was going 30 feet into the air. (right past my head)   Every time some would come loose, it would plug the exhaust, the engine would stall and I would pluck. ............KaPow!  and the engine would rev up again.

Finally I got it cleared and had no more problems.

I've never seen this before but know what to look for next time. :)

Nope.  There must still be enough in there to dampen the sound because it isn't any louder now than it was.

Have you seen the "Black Face" minstrels from the '20's?

 :D That's what I looked like.  :D

 :DYeah!  That's it.  :D :D

Those Kabota diesels are nice, we had this tractor lawn mower for 20 years, never a glitch in the engine. I'm very pleased.  :)

Heya Tom
Somthin to watch for. Thanks for the tip, specially about the "coal miner" syndrome associated with the problem :D :D Whut a bunch.  :D :D :D

On the kubota thing, the other day while resawing in the extreme heat, the thing just shut down. Scared me silly till I
seen the temp light on. The wind was just right and the sawdust(WRC) was pluggin up the rad like never before. Once it cooled down a bit, and my adrenalin level drop to somewhere near normal, I giver a blast with the leafblower and we were back in business. Good feature yes??

Tom

Yeah, it sure is.  I don't know which is the better feature, the over-temp shutdown, the low oil pressure shut-down or the leaf blower. :P :D :)

The leafblower is a bonus you bet. I wish I had one for each hand. ;D

I'm not as mechanically inclined as brother Tom.  I'd have never thought to look down the exhaust pipe. Pretty good diagnotics Tom!  Did the EPA show up to check the area for fiberglass contamination?

Back in military school, Tom used to cut hair for extra money. It cost 50 cents at the barbershop and Tom would cut hair for a quarter. Of course it was all real short with white sidewalls. I remember once Tom's clippers quit working. He took them apart and got it working. Only thing was, when he put it back together he had a couple of parts left over that he didn't know where they went. The clippers worked but were quite a bit more noisey. Saved himself from buying new clippers though. ;D

Stick around and I'll tell y'all more stories about Tom from time to time. You know, things that people should know. :D

You need to move down next door to Tom to keep an eye on'm. Or did he move to get as far away as possible, only to say I wish Charlie would visit once in awhile, then after you leave he says, glad that's over with. And goes back to the front porch to sip some iced tea to recover for a couple days before fire'n up the mill. You two are quite a team. :D :D

My grandfather and his brother were quite the story tellers and they'de tell some of the most unbelievable stuff. Everyone thought they were liars and try to out top them. But the stories where true. :D :D

Grandfather had camps for his guiding business and there was this sport with the cutes one night. He thinks he can out target shoot grandfather. Well grandfather makes it interesting and says I bet you can't put out that lit candle over there with a bullet. The guy steps up and fires a couple rounds and misses. Grandfather steps up and fires one shot and extinguished the candle, first try. :D :D What the guy didn't know was grandfather hads a shell which was blank and it was the force (wind) of the powder goin off that extinguished the candle. Pretty crafty eh? ;) I wish someone would'of wrote down all the stories, we'de have a pretty neet book to remember grandfather by. He was pretty hard to top for good stories. I remember alot of younger folk would come visit just for the stories, even alot of hunters from the states liked the stories as good as the hunting or fishing. It was all part of the trip to listen to the old chief tell the stories. (no he wasn't native but his house was on the reserve) :D :D

Hay Tom, you could have been in a world of heart up there!!! :o   That presser could have sent the muffler off there like a rocket right at ya had something gave way! :o :o   That little motor could be making hundreds of PSI in that thin little rusty exhaust system.   You are not allowed to go getting your self killed, we need ya around!!!

Now the black face reminds me of my mom. :D :D :D   We had a cole oil heating stove in the house I grew up in and it was the sole heat for the house.   One cold winter night when Dad was gone the fire went out.   Mom tried to relight it but when she shut the door it went right back out. ???   So she went in the Landry room on the other side of the stove wall and removed the stove pipe elbow.   She found the pipe all plugged with soot so she got a stick and cleaned out the part up to the outside.   Next she set out to clean the 3 foot between the stove and the elbow with her stick and WHOM!!!!   Air got to the firebox so all us kids go running in the Landry room to see what was up and as the smoke and soot lifted their was Mom.   She was wedged under the wringer washer in a pile of dirty pants, black from head to tow but for the rings around her eyes made by her glasses, and saying things about my Dad that cant be posted hear. :D :D :D   She got over it, they have their 63rd anniversary this year. 8)   We did get a gas stove soon after that as I remember. :P
