Hey guys, long time no post.  Basically, our internet at home is a dog.  I normally just pop in during breaks at work to check out a few threads and then slip back out.  I have a rather large milling project coming up.  We are going to try to mill about 8k board feet of 1x6 and 2x6 to send to Ethiopia to help a church mission over there.  I have not run the mill in over a year and I paid for it.  I did not run the gas out of the carb..... I am buying a new carb.  I had hoped a good cleaning would do the trick, but no such luck.  I am thinking that I may sell the mill when finished with this job and get a single phase electric band mill.  Does anyone have experience with one of these?  Do they have enough power?

Again, I hope all are doing well.

Good to see you back birdmarker (or is it breadmaker, or boardmaker? :) )

An electric motor would have more torque than a gas of equivalent horsepower. Single phase will draw a lot of amps though, depending on what hp you're talking about.

What size logs will you be working with?  Even with the better torque properties, you'll max out at around 10 hp.  With a phase converter, you could run a 15hp 3-phase motor.  3-phase motors are much smaller and more efficient (though some of that is lost in the phase converter).  Several sawmill manufacturers (including Norwood) have electric sawmills that run on 3-phase, which is common in Europe.  I have a friend with a 30 kW, 3-phase generator so that he can run his mill as a portable.

I don't think i would bail out just because of carb problems, heck just drain the float boll if it's going to set for a while and use stable or seafome in the gas ,it helps.A good carb cleaner to soak it in over night and compressed air would have saved you some money.plus a kit ,anyhow good luck.  al

Nope.  I quit when the green Kenya AA beans were not available.  They are available now but $$$$$$$

Sorry for the late response.  I let this one slip by.

Really, most logs will be about 16 - 20".  3 phase is out UNLESS I can score a really cheap phase converter.  That is an option.

Slider,

I have actually gotten pretty good at servicing the carb.  I wouldn't have to if I would drain the bowl.... I just seem to think "oh, I'll cut again in a couple days, so I'll leave it be".  Then, I wind up getting back to it in several months.  However, I really think I'd be better off cutting wider boards for woodworking.  Still, for a manual mill, the Lucas is very productive with a couple of helpers.
