You could always put a 350 Cummins on there like Lyle Niemi. ;D

Hook a 671 Detroit up to it and the neighbors will know you are sawing.

One of my neighbors (a gentleman in his late 60's) comes out side and sits on his porch to listen to my Detroit bark almost every time I saw. It's such a sweet song.

I believe you will be short at 58 HP.

Found this computation for H.P. requirements

i did the calculations from that page and i came up with a requirement of 55 HP for my mill,

i think the farmall will work for now as a power unit, it will at least get the sawdust flying and the boards ripping

i DO want an actual power unit, right now cost seems to be an issue, its too expencive, too far away, or too worn out  is what I am running into.

I dont mind Detroit too much in a vehicle, but to have one screaming at me next to the mill, i dont know :-\

an old sawyer near me has a 01 frick with a 52" blade, he has a huge old Allis-Charlmers power unit on it. gas, boy he has more power than he needs

The farmall will run it fine in softwood, not sure about hardwood. i take it the farmall has a belt pulley, you will have to see if the tractor will run your saw at the speed it is hammered for. Don

im just going on what the PTO dyno said, it very well could be a super M, i know the HP changes as you go from early models to late models, same tractors just more HP

blades i have i believe are 550 (have to double check), so 540 on a pto should be ok

plus its a left hand mill, so i can connect direct with a PTO shaft

i will be cutting mostly hemlock, and spruce for building material to get the mill and equipment under cover

i will get into hardwoods eventually, but my main focus is on buildings right now

Mike, give the old "M" a try some of the old long stroke engines punch above their weight class. Its a good idea to have ether a shear bolt or slip clutch in the drive line. Some farm impliments have slip clutches in their drivelines. Frank C.

yes definitely on the shear bolt, i don't care much for slip clutches, I've had them rust up and stick, just like an old truck clutch that hasn't been used in ages

shear bolts are cheap, parts are expencive

Power your mill with a Murphy Diesel. Check out JB Sawmill on you-tube. I have a 4-71 Detroit on mine now but, working on getting one of my Murphy's ready for the mill. The Detroit is doing a good job but, just too noisy and likes fuel . Gerhart Machinery in Litz, PA should have something . He is a old Murphy dealer. Just my 2 cents advice.

Buddy is right about the Murphy diesels, probibly the finest mill engines ever built. Some of the engines in old cranes and shovels are ideal, most are on their own skids and are a complete unit.Old crawler tractors with worn out bottoms are also worth looking into. The M will tide you over til you find a permanent diesel. A UD 14 would play with that mill and they work quietly and cheap.  8)

Hey Mike,

You could get yourself one of these...

Some advantage are; it runs for free and it solves your slabwood problems... The main disadvantage is that it takes a whole nother crew to run it.

Now don't take me serious. Most people don't... Just pointing out other alternatives.

The reason I have a sawmill is because I have a steam engine, and the reason I have a steam engine is because I have a sawmill. If I was doing this to make a living I would hook up the 3-71 Detroit that came with the sawmill when I bought it. I have had this mill for about 10 years and have never heard the Detroit run.

I had this engine on a different mill for about three years before this one.
