Keep the insurance agent away. :D

The Insurance agent did find a new Insurance for all of us. The trouble with the wood stove it's a lost art no one knows how to use one. I see it all the time green wood airtight stoves caps on the chimneys . ::) :D you can see it going down the road , blue smoke coming out of the chimneys insted of gray . :D :D :D :D

Or no smoke at all. My blaze king is over 90% efficient. All you normally see exiting my chimney is moisture or water vapor smoke. Very pale white. I load around 80 lbs of wood and it will last normally 1 day sometimes 2 if temp is at or above freezing.

I  was thinking more of the barrel stove, in the house. Never see them in a house, just a garage maybe. Heck, they get real squirrelly if an oil tank is older than 10 years these days. The only spills from tanks I've ever heard of was from abandoned buildings, flooded basements, someone hit an oil line or stole the copper line outside, and no whistle when filling the tank, so it poured out on the floor. A brand new tank won't solve none of it.  ::)

It was a kit , you get a door legs, callers. Just need to get the barrels.
There's no sand or brick in it and it's over 25 years old. I don't know about efficient. But it will hold a wheelbarrow of wood :D :D
My wife likes it warm in the house. -24 outside and + 80 inside :D
and I burn wood in the shop too I bet the insurance would not like it :D

Had a barrell stove in my shop for 28 years. It never burned out. I kept sand on the bottom. Had to be carefull when cleaning so so to remove the sand. After i bought the new blaze king, i took my old glacier bay out to the shop. I do miss that barrel stove tho, it put out the heat and now!

The shop stove is in better shape than mine. :D Mine is old as NB and made in Georgia before confederation I think.  ;D

80 is warm enough, but my furnace provides that plus another 10 degrees with a 1/4 HP motor on the fan. Windows will open thankfully. ;D

Nice looking stoves ET what model do you have? I liked the looks of the Chinook myself, we would like to put a small wood heater of some sort in our living room for the times when it is really cold or in the spring and fall  when we don't want to put heat in the floor, my wife wants a zero clearance fire place and I would prefer a small stove. She will probably win.

We have the Ultra. Zero clearance kit is included. Its not the most attractive stove but its good enough for me. The engineering involved in creating this stove is obvious by its design. This will be our 3rd season with it and are really okay with spending a bunch of money. We wanted efficiency and we got it!

Peter - I too really like your brick work around your stove. I have not seen one for many years. In my area, the double barrel stoves were very popular before the arrival of the air tight [Ficsher, Valley Comfort and Blaze King] and the crackdowwn by insurance companies.

ET - I too have a Blaze KIng air tight stove - bought it in 1986 and still going strong. At the time the EPA emmisions were just starting and I chose a model with out the catalytic afterburn mechanism.  I burn a lot of scrap wood from around the farm [old fence rails, etc] and I was advised that any metal material in waste wood had a high risk of damaging the  ceramic afterburner in the stove - so I have to clean my chimney on a regular basis, and thankfully live rurally so I do not have to meet local city emmision standards.

The Blaze King is made both in Walla Walla Washington and Penticton BC. They make a variety of types and as far as I am concerned are well worth the money.

I stareted using mine this fall on October 2nd. WAS a bit cool on a few mornngs in September, but I vowed not to start a fire till October.

My stove  - It has the double fan blower option which gets thing warm in a hurry.    Tom
