Seem to be hard to locate, my mainline is 3/4. Could anyone let me know what they are called, how to install, and where to get. I want to avoid using a knot. thanks

We always called them a bell.  I have a cable shop press them onto my line.

You could always use a ferrule.  They are re-usable as well.  I have had good luck with them.  Here is a link to what I am talking about.   http://www.labonville.com/Ferrules-Wedges_c_53.html

I have a way of donating my blood and most of my clothing to the Knot, maybe its just me.

Trim the end off. We have a cable cutter and we leave a tail after the knot then trim it off. No frayed knot.

That's what i do also tie not then melt 2 " of the tag end with torch seems to hold up good and no little needles to poke and tear you up

Also holding the cable with vice grips helps I have used the ferrule as well they work good but after the second time I shortened the cable I got impatient and tied a knot in it and the ferrule has been in my glove box the last 3 years haha

Pressed on the end of the line, out here it would be a "nubbin", the bell would be the choker bell. Ferrules and wedges work, but 3/4 swaged does not use the same as regular lay 3/4, but swaged probably isn't used on a skidder drum line, just mainline for those who need and can afford the extra load capacity.

Have a couple of the reusable ferules (bullets maybe) use one to build chokers with and the larger one on the end of the winch line.

Knots suck by the way, brake real fast, kind of a pain to tie even with 2 pairs of vice grips, you loose 2-3 feet every time you have to tie one on, not to mention how much line you loose when the cable does finally break.

The reusable end is pretty slick, once you figure out how to put the thing one (it don't come with instructions) you can have it back on it about 10 minutes, just remember to wrap the cable with tape or something before cutting it off in a clean spot slip the ring over with the big side of the hole facing out, work the strands around the brass pieces, give the collar a whack and yer done, come back at the end of the day and trim off the excess hairs.

The only hard part is getting the old broken end of cable out of the ferule, just have a punch and hammer on hand.
well that didn't work

I screwed a tight fitting nut onto the end of my swaged mainline and welded it.  I am using it for the drum end, so I don't know how long it would last with sliders pulling against it, but you might be able to weld three or four nuts on there...

My mainline just has a loop with a couple of cable clamps on it, it was like that when I bought it. I thought "I need to fix that right away" but it has held. Mind you, I've only pulled about 10 loads of wood with my skidder in the 3 years I've had it. If I was getting serious I'd order one of the reusable ferrules.

I just tie it into a knot. Got it down so I lose just over a foot. Mine always starts coming apart just above the first slide closest to the drum. Usually get a year or so out of cable on the big skidder.

I use a knot and  take a demo saw and cut it close I have never wasted 3feet of cable to tie a knot  but most of the time when it breaks  it frays 2-3 feet past any way  ;D

I suck at tying knots in cable :D its easier for me to splice the stuff...
well that didn't work
