January is almost done and here it has been like an old time winter. We got to 40 below at least one night, close a few more and just darn right cold many days and nights. Quite a bit of snow and we have only had one decent thaw, in January when it would have been expected years ago. Some drifting this year unlike recent winters where every few weeks we would get a thaw that would knock down the snow depth and make it so it wouldn't blow around. My mother in law has been at her brothers for three days waiting for the highways to reopen to her home town. She was in Mexico visiting a friend and came home two months too early. The long range forecast looks to continue on as we have been so I expect more of the same. Most people are complaining about their heating bills or are predicting they are going to run out of wood. Makes me feel young again, except for all the aches and pains wrinkles.

My Father grew up in the era of things being moved by sleds in the winter months and the roads was set up for sled traffic. I can hear him say,we would be in a mess trying to move logs now the way this winter is.
Most winters the temps would go up and melt the snow,or rain would come in or not much snow. I don't have much snow now, about 4 inches in the fields, maybe 6 in the woods.

I keep hearing people say this is like "the winters of the good ole days" or "like the winters when I was a kid". I know that memories fade and get skewed over time so that's why I'm a man of the numbers.

For this time of year our average high temp is around 20°. So far we've only reached that temp about 4 times since the first of December.

Our average 100 year total snowfall is around 180 inches. So far this year we are at 219 inches and climbing and its still January.

Worst winter ever? Probably not
Worse than average? I'd say so.

The severe cold is what we used to get in February back when I was a kid!

As most of you know, the winters have been getting milder as time went by, but this winter is different!

In the 60's and 70's I shoveled every day to leave home and to get home, also many days I would park my truck at a neighbors house then walk to his place they lived maybe hundred yards off a state highway. In 78 I carried a scoop shovel and would shovel snow away from standing trees to cut them the snow was so deep. Did most of the cutting on snow shoes man the good old days  :D

My folks bought our first snow sled in 1967, a Polaris Colt, 15 hp... it was one of the early "tanks" with metal cleats (made riding on hard crust or ice an adventure, you'd come around 360 degrees every time, fun). Couldn't get out of it's own way in any deep snow though. Had to pack ahead of it with snow shoes first.

Anyway, when you mentioned the 60s and 70s winters... I remember in the late 60s we had enough snow to drift up and over the peak of the el's roof at the old farm. My aunt's place up the road did this same thing and packed in hard enough to ride that old sled right up onto the edge of the roof and back down. At our farm, my brother and I shoveled a tunnel through that huge drift to the living room window. Was pretty cool looking out through it from the inside.

Believe me, I can complain as much as the next guy about the cold and all the work in can take to clear lots of snow but, I sure do miss those old time winters sometimes.

That was bad winter, think '69??  I was only 8 and I had fun jumping off the shed roof. I can not remember another one like that. And that is really all I do remember of it.   :D

I don't need the media to tell me it is a LOT tougher than what I've gotten used to. It is the most snow here since we built this house in 1984, and it is the coldest it has been here since we built this house in 1984. So in my book, it is the worst winter here since 1984.  :) I can't speak for anywhere else. I can remember what seemed like worse winters when I was a kid, but then again, I was a kid.
