A neighbor gave me a big cherry tree.

I was given a cherry tree on my last logging job that had come down in a cow pasture. I was going to buck it up and get it out for the next truck load, but I decided to wait until later in the summer when I go back for a couple of big pine that I'm after there. I've never seen a 48" cherry around here. I've heard of them in PA, but I don't think I've seen one over about 30" DBH. That's a 395XP with a 24" bar for comparison. There are a lot of good logs above the crotch, as well as some nice crooked stuff I'll use for timber framing. Even the halves of the butt are full of good wood.

That's a good score Dave.  I've been saving out cherry from the firewood pile and hauling small loads to a local mill for a timber framing friend of mine, but everything I have is small and awfully wongely...

How is the cherry used in timber framing? Timbers? Pegs? Don't know much about timber framing.

Dave Shepard

You can use it for straight timbers, but it is really well suited for crooked stuff. Curved cherry braces make a nice contrast in a pine frame.

I'm hoping so. :) I cut a log off of the bottom leader. It had a few inches of heart rot, but I've got no use for the heart anyway. Was still nice and red. 8)

It was going to be firewood if I hadn't come along.

The timber framer I'm selling to is using it for curved braces as well.  Anything big/straight enough to get 7-8" wide braces, he's using as such but most are curved for added headroom and aesthetic appeal.

Glad you are there to keep that cherry from going up in smoke Dave.

Looks like "later in the summer" is tomorrow. :D I need those big pines, and several more, to fill an order. I will get the cherry out and bucked up. No sense paying trucking on half a load. ;) I can't wait to see what's in there, but it will be a couple of weeks before I can get to the cherry.
