As some of you know I hunt with a crossbow with scope(non-magnification, just cross hairs). I have it sighted in for 20 yards but I perfer the closer shot. I sit on the ground and for this year I have a great place behind my place, only problem is I'm shooting up hill, I think. I have my yards mark off(10-15-20). The first deer an 8 point I shot under it, at 20 yards, the second deer,a 10 point, I shot it just under the heart and lungs. I track it for 7 hours today and lost track of blood. :( I hate this when this happens but sometimes it does.
My question is when you shoot up hill is there something that I dont know about or am I having bad luck. ::)

Ya ever hear of Gravity  ;D ;D ;D  I know that ain't far, but, when ya shoot outta a tree, it ain't the same as on the ground, either. You have to adjust the sights for that. I might take a few practice shots in that area and adjust the sights. Leave it rest for a few days, then go back.

  Never have shot a crossbow. ::) :D :D :D

Shooting down you'll hit high, shooting up you'll hit low.
How much depends on how far and what angle.

EZ

Kinda thought the gravity thing had sumtin to do with it.
Thanks guys.

Come on up, FD, and I'll let you sight it in(up hill) for me.

I typed in "shooting uphill" into Google and was overwhelmed with Gobbledygook about 40 feet deep.   Seems that the trigonometry says that you shoot high regardless of uphill or downhill when compared to straight ahead.  I read and read and still don't understand.  You should see some of the formulas and convoluted what-cha-macallits that they display.   Lots of folks trying to explain it.  Lots of numbers with little squiglies around them.  :P

Maybe I should use a tree stand. If I would go up 15 or 20 feet, it would be a straight shot. :D

Take out a target and find where your hitting and adjust accordingly. I use to hunt in tree stands alot and found that practicing off our deck to a target helped out.

I've never used a crossbow before, what kind ya got. :)

Was it the Duke that said "Chute low Chad,  der ridin Chetlands"   No,  I think it musta been Chet what said dat :D

Me and my Horton  ;D went out this morning and a buck came in from behind me, and that was all I seen.
I went up to the house and got my target and set it at 20 yards where that buck that got away was standing. I shot it and the arrow went under it, which was about 4 inch from the bullseye. :o I sat the target so I could shoot straight into it and bullseye. ;D I set the target on the up grade at 15 yards and bullseye.
I think I'm going to have to find a different place to sit, this up and down thing just aint going to cut it. ::)

I was talking with a guy today that seems to know alot about bows. He told me that with a 175 lb crossbow it should shoot straight at 20 yards know matter what the angle I'm at. He said that my crossbow probably needs re-stung with new cable. :( He said at 15 yards the arrow or bolt should go straight threw the deer know matter where I hit it at. The 10 pointer I shot the other day the bolt just fell out the other side. ::) Hope this is the problem.

I live in the hills and shoot up and down all the time.  I bow hunt from a treestand and most of the time I am 40 ft above the ground at the bottom of the tree and at 20 yards down hill I may be 60 feet above and at 20 yards up hill I may be just 20 ft up.  Makes for some good shooting.  But if I can brag I have not missed a shot in the last 10 deer I have taken with a bow.  The ole timers always told me that when shooting up hill you aim a bit low and when shooting down hill you shoot a bit high.  This is because the point that you are aiming at is 8 inches closer to you then the point that you wish to hit.  We all want to aim at that "Bulls eye" we see on that deers shoulder as when we are level.  But you have got to remember that the real target is inside of that and the angle changes  when up or down hill.
Now for EZ's problem.  I would take the bow to a archery store that has a range and a "speed gun" and test your bow.  It should shoot dead on with as little as 1 inch differance between 10 and 20 yards.  I would guess a weak limb(s) or bad cable.  They can tell you most quick by the speed and travel of the bolt what the problem is.
Here we cut your shirt tail off when you miss a buck and hang it on deer camp wall for all to see.  You just have sleeves and a coller left so you best get to the archery shoppe.

I did just that this past wk end. The bow was shooting 60 mph to slow. The guy put a 200 lb cable on and said I should be able to knock a deer down at 30 yards. But I think I will keep it at 20 yards cause I dont want Arkansawyer to drive all the way up here just to cut off my shirt tail. ;D

   EZ ,
I think at this point I would have to take the rest of the shirt as there is not much left.  :)  60 mph to slow is alot.  I bet you will do better now.

I have seen where guys leave their bows in the truck and it gets really hot and the life goes out of the limbs.
I have a Martin bow and it only has two sight pins about 1/4 inch apart.  One is 20 yards and the other 40 yards.  In Texas I have shot deer 60 yards away and the arrow pass all the way through.

Now we expect to see a photo of that 10 point.
