I was on the woodlot today for about an hour and I sited 1 beaver, 1 ruffed grouse, 1 squirrel.....but to my surprise I saw a Great Blue Heron. This being December 3rd, I'm thinking its late for them, since I haven't been seeing them in the larger creeks. I saw this one take off from a beaver pond when a beaver made a mad dash for his lodge downstream of the bridge.

Anyone seeng blue herons in the northern states of any of the provinces this late. I thought they left in November.

Oh, and I must say I have not seen a robin or grackle in 2 weeks now.

Its still an open fall this year in my area and rain expected for saturday night into sunday.

Just curious.

SD ... seen one today flyen east as I was splitten wood. As long as they got creatures to eat I don't think they migrate till the water gets too hard. (freezes) :o
just another beaver with a chainsaw &  it's never so bad that it couldn't get worse.

There is one that stalks about in the edges of Hanna's Millpond, about 2 miles from my place. I don't know where he/she call's home, but I'm treated to a fly-by every evening about sundown.  It ain't particularly late for them here, but this IS Florida, ya know?

I've got two regulars at a beaver pond on my land. I saw one of them last week. He might still be around, but it's dark by the time I get home now so I don't see anything. The lakes and ponds are still open here. I think some of those big guys might stay till ice forms. I love those birds.

I don't see them in the larger creek, like the Presque Isle, but this was a surprise to see in the smaller brook. I always thought they disappeared in early November. :o Its been cold for a couple days and some shore ice forming, but going to rain for the next 2 days I think. I saw one heron three weeks ago on a walk up the road and its light colored kneck blended right in with the pavement. I thought it was a crow at first around the culvert in the road. A car whizzed past me and it took off up the road in front of the car. There sure is alot of wildlife around those two little brooks. Seen a fox and 6 partridge not far from one another one morning in the same place. Dang fox didn't know what to do when he saw me and started making circles then took off. Just before then I saw a nice 6 pointer trot in front of me the day after hunting season (3rd week Nov). :)

Well, I was trying to make a panaramic view of the beaver pond today but the images didn't have enough overlap. There just so happened to be a moose in area because I heard crushing ice under its hooves. And on close investigation I see the dang thing crossed the thin ice on the beaver pond. Now its only just froze over the last couple or 3 days, since its been down in the single digits at night. This is another pond , on the back end of my woodlot. The front pond I seen the beaver at and the heron is next door on my cousin's land. They've built the dam on my lot up another foot since last spring, but its not flooding anything of value on my property. There are now two beaver houses on it. Maybe the old hut got too louse infested. ;D
