For people with OWBs under the heading of things you will probably need in the future falls normal heat exchanger, coil and incoming and outgoing temperatures on hot water systems. These temperatures are used to troubleshoot the system to determine how well each component is working. Temperatures only will not necessarily point to a single problem but generally will narrow the field and sometimes will eliminate most possibilities. If a component completely fails troubleshooting tends to be easy, it is when a component partially fails that the temperatures become important. While your system is loaded and working well all components should have their incoming and outgoing temperatures logged in a reference sheet for when the system isn't working well.

I run a Garn and have heat exchangers on four systems that run off of it. I installed  temp, pressure combo gauges before the heat exchangers and after. I marked with a sharpie the temp and pressure they were running at when the system was first set up. It helps to tell when a strainer on the heat exchanger is plugging up or a pump is failing. It is always a good thing to know were something started. We use sharpie a lot a work to see if a operator has made a adjustment to a machine they shouldn't.
