Any one have any info on low grade white oak logs? Such as the flooring grade. Finally got a broker out to the mill today says he will buy 3000 bf a month if we can meet on the price.

it cant be that good, 48 to 55 maybe a thousand,,low grade often has a bad taste in regards to price

I pay between 25 and 40 cents a foot depending on size and just how low grade they are

I'm waiting to hear back on a white oak log later this week.Supposed to be 48 inches at the small end and 27 feet long. There are problems at the loading end due to weight. I'm hoping to come in at less than 50 per... Rob

The broker was wanting 3000 bf a month, but said he needs to be in the 50 cent a foot range. Problem here is I'm in stave country so white oak is hard to come by no matter the grade. I told him that wasn't doable because #3 grade logs are going for 50 cents a bf. So my question is should I counter him with an offer or just walk away. Can't saw for free.

we been giving 450 a mbdft straight across all species thats to much but its what it takes to get them :-\
to give you an idea about the log quality our last load had 7 bdft of fas on it and i wasnt upset ::)

What are his specs  ?   1 1/8   ?      Random width?
Could you get tie logs and cut ties and have the side lumber for this market?

Just cutting to that certain size I can't see how anyone could make any money. A log big enough to saw that out of would be better to saw into a tie if it would make a 7x9 and cut it back to 9'. Smaller diameter logs that would make  6 x8 might be ripped into 2x8 and come out ahead a little but it's gonna take a lot of logs.

Very Interesting . You bought a sawmill. You bought a second sawmill. You got an order now you need logs. Now you realize you can't make $$$. Start with basics and work your way up . YOU have to Give someone a reason to buy from you.  Why is your product better then the guy down the street ?  Quality from your one year experience ?

I can get logs no problem. And have been making money on ties. I just don't like the idea of having all my eggs in one basket so to speak. This by no means is a make or break situation here. It's good to have all bases covered in my book which is the purpose of me talking to a broker to keep stuff moving.

I get $1.60 bf for the stuff you're talking about.    Green, right off the mill. 8)

One year experience? Looks like the guy who knows every thing don't have all his facts here. And even if that were the case if you cut a board and I cut a board both the same specs is your board better than mine? If so how does that happen if there both the same? I did buy two mills last year but sold my old mill before I bought the new ones. But I fail to see what this has to do with the topic here. And as far as the logs go I had them delivered before the guy even came and if this deal here don't work out I'll cut them into ties and still make money. So of all the things you mentioned  here none of them  are factual.

I will admit, I miss read the OP,, Log prices,,  this can go anywhere from 32 to 60 bucks a ton, and just for white oak, I have no idea, 3000 bdft a month is a manageable amount, and for these it would have to be a minimum of .65/bdft, a tie as you know get bout that with lots less labor,, regardless of the grade,  I had a buyer wanting to hire me to saw similar stuff, just not worth the effort, a different basket for sure but not a good one this time,

Your right about that cut a tie with alot less effort. I'd say that will be the route I'm gonna go.

Ohio_Bill

To bad they dont want 8 or 9 ft . That would be a outlet for the side lumber of your ties . I would guess they are for mats .

Peter...shame your down there, and I'm up here...I sell 3x's the amount of red oak as white oak, easily...I have 2 20' butt logs sitting with little motivation to saw them...oak all around seems to be on the rise...I have these 2 mentioned logs left over from one of my rare white oak orders that required 20' lumber... I paid a buck a bf for them, delivered... Sounds insane, but I knew the price from the logger before quoting my order, so it was adjusted accordingly... And they aren't beauties past 9 foot...I just paid .75 cents a bf for "prime" red oak, and I had to pick them up...but again, the order was quoted accordingly. And even at that price, and being prime logs, there still were some unfortunate surprises, and losses heavier than anticipated. But, without big bucks and an animated scanner, it happens... I started a new part time offbearer today, and he did fine...he saw once I started sawing and guiding him about what boards go in what stack by grade...I told him "see, never know what's inside for sure".... Followed by, "there's no instruction manual found inside a log when you open it up"....he'll be back tomorrow morning...

While I did make you Think . Now you have an answer of your own . If two very good sawyers sawed similar logs there are two different sawed logs. AND that is it done over bring on the next log . After all they do grow on Trees .
