Has anyone made a Discord server for here/about logging/chainsaws/milling and other stuff like that??

Sorry if this isn't the place to ask I'm new here..

If there is interest in this idea I would be happy to start one.

Discord is a program kinda like a IRC.. Users can talk to other users in channels almost like a forum but its all instant. IMO it makes for a more fluid conversation. Allot of people use it for voice chatting like skype does.

Well, this isn't the place. You are welcome to come here and discuss such issues as you mentioned here, but I'm letting you know it is poor etiquette to join a forum to discuss moving such discussions to a different place and format.

I didn't really see it as moving discussion to another platform but I can understand your thinking.. I was thinking of discord as more of a way for people to connect better, as I don't always have my web browser open but I always have discord open. I'm not looking to start any fights or arguments or anything and I'm sorry if my post came out as hostile, I didn't mean for it to.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of real time chat. Makes me feel obligated to respond. I prefer the lazier forum system, where you throw something up on the bulletin board, and people can respond, or not. Also, there's a lot of old timers here. Chat systems may seem somewhat foreign to them.

Not speaking for Jeff, but if I had a forum, I wouldn't be completely comfortable with a chat system, even if it were built into the board. It tends to fragment the community, with younger, techier members gravitating towards that, and others going to the forum proper. Also, for things like forestry, useful information can be lost to the ether, and/or difficult to search for. A forum is a sloppy, self building wiki, and that works very well for things that don't change quickly. Discord, IRC et al are a better fit for software development, bug reporting, and general screwing around. All IMHO of course.

I think SLice meant no harm and perhaps didn't understand his proposal as it relates to folks who have been here and communicating in this format for many many years. Slice, one of the benefits of having this format is that everything is easily searchable, thereby creating an incredible knowledge base, in fact it is one of the best on the internet. When I do searches for a solution to a problem on the 'net, I often find myself referred back here. In addition, most of the folks here have other lives and cannot sit and chat in real time, they leave a question or a comment, or a photo, and come back hours or days later to pick up the conversation. Some only have limited internet access because of their remote locations. It's sort of like how some folks used to play chess by mail many decades ago. They would mail their move, and then wait for a response for a counter move. It may sound slow to you, but it worked for them. This works for me. If I wanted some quick and interesting banter I would stand in front of a mirror or go to a local pub. I would not go out on the internet for it. Welcome aboard, get to know the folks here. Some may even grow on you.

I completely understand what you guys are saying. I get sent here all the time from google when trying to fix a problem to. I just think that it kinda wastes (might not be the right word) space on the board for simple questions when they could be asked and answered in real time rather then waiting. I do understand to though, that those simple questions could hold the answers for others that are looking in from google for example, or even from here. I maybe should have waited and tried out the site for a bit before posting all this but meh live and learn.

Regarding the trivial questions... I'd argue nothing is trivial to the right person. While forums lack speed, they make up for it in permanence. I've gleaned tiny fragments of information from esoteric topics that got me on the right path to solving a problem, even though the parties involved were likely nowhere to be found. If that info had been in chat, I'd have been SOL. There's no telling what has value to someone. One man's junk and all that...

The posts on the Forestry Forum are here for all to see, at any time. If something happens in a chatroom, it's gone once the season closes. You wouldn't get sent here from Google if there was nothing here.

I understand Jeff's concern and position. He's worked very hard to create a very successful site and more importantly a culture that is positive and "healthy" as far as online forums go. I also agree that most members here appreciate the permanence of the discussions here.

Slice107, I encourage you to look through the "Whatcha Sawin'" thread in the Sawmills and Milling Forum for an example of why the "Snapchat" model doesn't work for us. One more example is the "Useful Sawmill Mods" thread in the Sawmills and Milling Forum. There are many others.

One of the best things about this forum is that we don't mind repetitive questions. Most people will never look beyond the first(latest) page on any one of these boards. If they don't see what they want there, they ask a question that may have been answered a hundred times before. We answer it again, knowing that multiple people will learn from that answer, mostly folks that hadn't even thought of the question before. Now this "Discord" thing just sounds like a chat room which is great for idle chit-chat but virtually worthless for spreading knowledge to the masses.

They do. Nowdays thats where babies come from. The United Brotherhood of Pediatric Stork Aviators fought it tooth and nail, but lost and disbanded. AOL became tinder.

One of the best features of the FF is that the photos are permanent and plentiful. I cant image how many times a picture was worth a thousand words when a technique or tool was being discussed. How many words would Yellowhammer have needed to pound into the keyboard to show us RRQS?
Slice, if you don't ask, the answer will always be no. . . it didn't hurt to float the idea though.

You inadvertently came up with a great name for a discord competitor! It's customary in open source development to give a nod to the project you're imitating or forking from by using part of the name, or a play on words referencing the original project. I propose "datcord" as the gpl competitor to discord. I'd always recommend taking datcord over discord, cause your freedom's important :^P
