Hello Forestry folk.

My question is should the bolts, or rather studs, through the bar be hardened or high tensile?

I just used 8M or5/16 threaded rod (endless thread).

I just used grade 5 bolts. Never had a problem.

How did you not wreck the bearing?

Mike, Not sure how it was done but looks like the hole was not drilled where it was marked and I dont think the chain sticks out in front that far on my chainsaw. Maybe just the way it looks dont know.

I think Mike meant the bearing in the sprocket on the nose of the bar...I'm afraid you have an unpleasant surprise awaiting you.

Sorry Barbender, but the nose is what I was referring to. Dont know of any surprizes.

Did the bar have a sprocket in the nose? It looks like it does in the photo, but there is such a thing as a hardnose bar with no sprocket. If there is a sprocket it needs to spin add an unbelievably fast rate and any life depends on the bearing that would be at the center of it which appears to have been drilled out by the bolt hole.

that little hole is the lube port for the sprocket nose bearing.  i hope its a hardnose bar that just happens to have the hole for a sprocket never installed.

Looks like sprocket teeth sticking just above the end of the bar, but could be my mistake.  If it has a sprocket I would be interested to know if the Bar/sprocket function as required.
I have not seen a bolt hole through the sprocket area  usually behind the sprocket area.

I see from the picture that it's an Oregon bar and clearly see the nose sprocket. If "I" were to get close to his position, then I would have drilled somewhere else in the replacement nose part that wouldn't have gotten into the bearings but still been into the replaceable nose. BTW, I've never seen a replaceable nose on a hard nose bar, but I haven't been around them as long as some of you more "experienced" folks among us have.

Well, I see I just duplicated what was just said
