This time tomorrow mornin we will be on the road headin south to wild boar hunt.  We missed last year.  We never hunted in North Carolina before.  They gonna be free range wild boar.  The F250 will be packed with coolers.  Wish us luck! 8)

What part of our great state are you hunting?  We have an abundance of hogs if you know where to look!

It seems that the NC Wildlife Resources Commission recently has reclassified all wild Russian Boar, Russian Boar/feral swine crosses and feral swine into one category, feral swine.  They have deemed them an invasive species.

A huge (700 plus pounds) Russian Boar cross was killed in Transylvania County to the far west in NC five or six years ago.  The Russian Boar were imported in the early 1900s at Hooper Bald where there was a private hunting preserve (there were imported mule deer, exotic bear and bison also imported).  The other animals "disappeared" or died but the Boar escaped and started a small breeding group which began to include free range domesticated pigs.  The Boar have done quite well in the mountains.  Turkey hunters kill quite a few hogs in the mountains.

Flooding due to hurricanes over the last 15 years has caused many domesticated pigs to get free and become feral in the eastern parts of NC.  Because of the rapid expansion of their population, the Wildlife Resources Commission has removed seasons, bag limits and night-time hunting rules on all feral swine.  The feral swine are no longer considered "big game" like deer, bear and turkey here.  For hunting private land only a valid NC Hunting License is required.  To hunt public game lands there are some more involved regulations but not many. There are a few regulations on hunting feral swine with dogs as well.

Some say it is a matter of time before feral swine are in all 100 counties.  I've not seen them in Stokes County, yet.

Good luck and safe hunting, wild boar can be mean!

The cold north keeps most invasives in check, although the wild turkeys are prospering. We had our first regulated turkey hunt here last spring. ;D Another invasive for way up this way is the white tailed deer, it's not doing as well.
