Jeff

There is quite a bit here on the Forestry Forum about Lime Island, as I used to volunteer up there. You can see it from my cabin from 75' up. :)

This is a project I've been working on since I found this copy of a tape that was to be used in a project over 20 yrs ago, but never really came to fruition. It was in a tote for years, was lost, then resurfaced stuck in an old broken VCR.
This is footage of life on Lime Island in the 1950's. Recovered from a VHF tape that was probably a copy of a copy, that had recorded the footage, probably by being pointed at an 8mm movie screen. It's better than it sounds, but you get the Idea!  I fear we are probably not that many  years from not having the opportunity to learn about this time on Lime Island from people that grew up there.

Like you Jeff, those old films are important to get a snapshot in time in the life and goings on in those times. I've got old film here from the 40's around grandfather's neighborhood, before any dams disturbed the rivers. When one could take a rod and a fly hook down to the river in front of the house or up at his camps, on parts of the river he had title to, and catch a salmon for dinner. Nothing better than fresh sea sun salmon. :) There's also film on farming and hand picking potatoes in the 50's from this area, I've seen on the National Film Board's Youtube channel. Not that I have anything against fisherman, but I get tired of seeing an old run down fishing shack on every calendar representing NB. I think they need new photographers with some different perspectives. :D

I found more stll photos and put them together. While going through some old files off of some old computer drives yesterday morning,  I found a directory that said Lime Island jpgs. I'm sure I acquired them over 20 years ago while working on a Lime Island project that never came to be. These are completly different than the video recovery images I did earlier.

I spent the day working on a way to present them so they could be commented on individually, so they are all numbered in the video.

It looks to me like this is perhap the Army core of engineers as well as volunteer work, but I don't know, but I know someone will!

Please, if you see something that you know something about, use the photo number to record your memories in the video's comments.
Hope you enjoy Lime Island. I expect to get back out there again soon!  AaaThe first video I did a few days ago is up over 1000 views, as the old islanders have found it and began to comment.

Great stuff Jeff, thanks for putting it up here.  We're big fans of all Great Lakes islands.

Those photos hint at a great many stories.  Some of the scenes remind me of Fayette State Park on the Garden Penninsula-the old lime kilns and such.
