I'm moving to the Destin, FL area (Eglin AFB) in July. I've got a very large chainsaw mill and have plans to get a sawmill while down there. I'm in Northern Alabama now, and I'm wondering how much less available hardwoods will be down that way. Am I going to have occasion to ever use my big chainsaw mill? All ive heard is that there is a lot of pine....Will I mostly just have pines to mill if I buy a sawmill while there?

Anyone here live within an hour or so of Destin?

I grew up north of Pensacola an hour or so from Elgin so my info is a little dated but I doubt too much.

Yes, pine is plentiful but there is tulip poplar, water oak, red oak, post oak, sweetgum, blackgum, cypress, pecan, hickory, etc. There is a little maple but what I remember was a little small for milling. You may find an occasional walnut, bay or magnolia log. You might even find a nice persimmon once in a while.

And I imagine the occasional Live Oak.

Possibly, but all the live oaks I saw actually started growing/appearing a couple hundred miles south of us.

You can add a few holly to the list.

A local business man brought  a couple small live oak logs from his lot in Destin for me to mill. There are apparently a few there at least.

I am back for a visit in the N. Fla area where I grew up and stand by my earlier tree list. I can add sycamore along the waterways and don't forget the kudzu. ::)
