I had a strange thing to happen today.  I had finished sawing a cant and while I was waiting for the tailgunners to offload the boards, the blade snapped.  The sawmill and blade standing still when it blade broke.  This was a new blade and had only sawed one log.  Broke in the weld.

No problem because Wood-Mizer will warrant it, but still strange.  This was a non-serial numbered blade.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

I had a brand new blade break the other day....made it 3' into the first cut.  Broke right at the weld.

Hadn't considered that WM might warrant it.  Figured I was just out a blade.

I have never had a weld break that was not warranty replaced.

I ordered 60 blades in May of 2021 and out of the 60 I had 28 of them that either broke or cracked right down beside the weld mostly the first time on the saw and a few of those 28 the second time on the saw.  Woodmizer has always replaced free of charge any blade I have had do that in the weld without me even having to send them back. On these I took pictures of them and emailed them to Woodmizer and they ask me to send them back because it was so many of them and they did go right ahead and send my replacement ones out before I even had the bad ones shipped.  After inspecting them they gave me full credit as always.  All of the blades had the Woodmizer name and numbers on them.

Also its not a good idea to be coiling a blade up if you know it is cracked in the weld. I never have had or heard of one breaking when being coiled but just common sense to not coil it if you know it is cracked. I try to remember to look at the welds when I take them off of the saw.

Craig, I should finish sawing the Cypress tomorrow, but now I have a log truck load of mostly Walnut plus every other species imaginable to saw.  That plus more loads to come.  Looks like I will be here for a while. :-X

What is a non serial numbered band? I have not run across a WM band that did not have a number that I am aware of. I may not have paid close enough attention, is there a difference?
Opportunity is missed by most because it shows up wearing bib overalls and looks like work.

I had something similar last week.  blade was at the end for sharp, and it broke out of the cut as I brought the carriage back to the control station.  pop.  not at the weld.  I guess if you use enough blades this will happen at some point.

About 2 years ago I had a Turbo 7 make one cut in a 6foot long Red Oak log before I could raise the head it went bang and broke at the weld. The rest of the blades in that box did fine.

I wonder if once in awhile the welds don't quite get annealed enough.  When I used to weld metal cutting blades a good annealing was important.

My last box of 15, plus the Resharp replacement blades do not have the familiar "birthmark" etched into the blade about 12" to the right of the weld.  Instead they are embossed with a Turbo7 logo in a couple of places on the blade.
