At first I thought it was an ant mound, but there are no ants (or anything else) that I can see coming and going.

The mud is rain proof and a solid mass. Anyone??

When that happens here (and it does) it's ants.  Rainwater floods the nest cavity and floats the dirt out.  There is nowhere for the ants to go so they abandon the area.

When I was young  my mom told me if you dig deep enough you will wind up in China.  Maybe someone  from China is close to breaking  through  :o
Seriously I agree  with  Magicman that it's most likely  ants. Looks like one side of the concrete  is dropping and that's  probably  where it came from.

That is hilarious and you are spot on, size 8 and all. 😂 I think we should be a little concerned that you knew that.

Moving on, my niece captured the suspect on camera and it appears to be a Potter Wasp, which kills caterpillars so I might just leave the nest alone, because nature.

The wasp thing. It must be the time of year, I've seen it a couple of times and someone told me what it was this morning. You'll be mowing in a cloud of hundreds of wasps, but none are aggressive or interested in the least in you. You know how seagulls trail a fishing boat; they are Japanese beetle larvae predators going for disturbed grubs in the lawn.

Ianab

We have critters excavating here too. Down the side of our rental house.

I'll get a picture of the occupant later, they only come out at night. Too many chickens during the day :D

Here we go, out and about. There are literally 100s of these little guys around the beach and up into the gardens and trees. Seldom see a crab in the lagoon (too many trigger fish), but on land they are everywhere.

He looks angry. I'd rather have the wasps.

If you think that guy looks angry, what about this burrow?

I'm not sure I want to know either.  :D

They don't have rabbits / moles etc, that's a crab burrow.

I couldn't live down there or in Australia. Asy sent me a picture of a bat hanging off the side of a house gutter that was huge. 😳

We have an ant problem in the crack between the driveway and the slab in the garage. It'll be fine for months then all of the sudden I'll open the garage door and there'll be thousands and thousands of ants in a few different piles along that crack. I don't mind bugs but that gives me the creeps.
