While picking up parts for another saw and looking for an excuse for a new one, the local dealer had a new MS400C in stock. I'm hoping it will be a good compliment to my MS170, MS261CM and Husqvarna 357XP. It the largest displacement saw I've ever had, with very positive reviews it seems.

I haven't fired it up yet, but it should be a pretty good handful with a 20" bar for bucking.

On my 261 I did the muffle mod and completely woke it up. Is this necessary on the 400 as well? If so, I'd like some run time on it before I mess with it at all.  Any experience from you folks?

I really wanted one but no full wrap handles without questionable aftermarket parts. Can't for the life of me figure how this saw fell into the pro lineup.

Care to explain?

According to the internet, the 362 and the 400 share the same chassis.  Several folks have said the 362 wrap kit fits the 400.  I've not read any counterclaims.  You could do a little searching on the web and see what I am talking about.

400 is a good saw . Got lots of time running them . 20 inch bar set works perfect on them as well.  They are good on fuel.and a good firewood saw

I have a 400 and I like it a lot.  Normally run a 20 inch bar on it.   I like my 362's for firewood and small timber logging and my 462's for the bigger hard woods  but the 400 certainly earned its place in the line up.   I'd buy another but sense I got mine the saw shop never got another one in.   They said they got sent  10 of them then no more.   Wonder why.

Because it's a "pro"saw. There are plenty of pro level saws out there without wraps. That in itse;f doesn't define a saw. The rest of the chassis is similar to the 362, and it's the only one with a magnesium piston. Mine runs hard. Better than my 562, and that is another pro saw without a wrap.

here if saw shows up with full wrap you either change handle bar or cut the full wrap part off cause with it on saw you cannot cut close enough to the ground , stumps have to be very low and when cutting stuff like high grade every inch you leave on the stump cost you money

sawguy21

If I have to cut that low I'm in the dirt. :-\ Plus my back won't take it.

your back gets use to it pretty fast , lots of places have a stump height limit and its pretty low

Even if your back likes those taller stumps, first time u get hung up on a ft and a half tall stump in deep snow with a tractor, what ever "back" savings you had is spent. :)  My Wallet also likes the extra 1ft per tree too. Have to say for me scrumming around with a big heavy long bar saw with a full wrap getting a stump right wears on my back. A case for saws like the 400i with a standard handle & a 24 inch light bar.

My dealer has several 400's, but no 500's.

Most dealers will have a 500i or 2 in stock here , 400 are not so easy to find but they are around and getting more all the time , 462 arctic is fairly hard to find at this time

Whiplash1

Been running one for almost a year now and love it, really came to life after 7-8 tanks of fuel and added bark box. Don't know if it really helped much but *DanG it's loud

I've been running mine for a year now and i really love it. Perfect in smaller wood with a 20" bar
