Just bot 150 acres in the Adirondacks.  I have not walked the whole property but from sat photos is seems to be completly forested with pine. I would like to have someone come in and cut out the useless stuff to let the good stuff grow. I would also like an area clear cut for a homesite. Any thoughts pointers pitfalls?

Contact a forester. Go from there.

Ron Scott

Ditto! On contacting a professional forester to do an evaluation of your entire property and provide you with advice to meet your management objectives through practicing "good" forestry.

Would you tell us about your forestry experience?

I graduated in 1990 from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. I hold a Dual BA in Environmental and Forest Biology, and Resource Management. I own and operate a forest management company since I graduated in 1990. I practice forest management every day for many landowners in the NY area.

Thanks, I guess that says it all (or says a lot).  :o

I'll tiptoe out now.  I get the distinct feeling you didn't want to be asked that question, and for that, I apologize to you.

also, contact your State Forester(look in gov't pages maybe under Dept of Conservation), who will probably come to your property and talk to you for free, and has lots of resources, "programs"  and info for you.

Jeff

nypine, you certainly want to eductate yourself as much as you can.

Nypine, hopefully those photos (usually aerial) are current. But as far as educating yourself a bit, do you have any private land owner associations in the area? Some of these organizations have free short courses on woodlot management. If not, then maybe your state forestry department sponsors such things. It's not rocket science, but I'de sure hate to send someone fishing without the reel. ;) After a little intro into woodlot management, then I'de have a management plan with inventory compiled. This won't neccessarily hold your plans up for clearing that lot though. ;)

cheers

Untill very reciently New York had an excellent program where a state forester would come to your place, develope a plan, mark for thinning and give you a list of local loggers. All for 7 dollars an acre. It seemed like a great deal when I had it done two years ago.
But like any of the few programs in the great state of New York that work and are helpfull to the tax paying - working class...........They canceled it >:(

I can't even find my big blue button,
Welcome nyforester, pull up a stump & sit a spell!
