We have a population of Barred owls around the cabin. Like, close around. At least 3 were calling back and forth

Here in NZ we have one small Owl. Ironically when I lived in New Plymouth (local city) I would hear them all the time, and even have them sitting on my deck railing. Where I live now, 1/2 an hour away, we don't hear them. Went out with the kids to watch the Aurora a few weeks back, and drove up by the National Park gates to get a good view of the South sky. Sitting there in the dark, and you here "morepork" calls from the forest close behind us. Taylor was a bit freaked out. She knew the kiwi calls, which are actually a more scary (Jurassic Park style) screech. The Maori name for the Owl is Ruru, which is also similar to their call. But Morepork is the English "translation".

I have them on the woodlot, I saw one a few feet from the lean to last winter. Was also lucky to see a goshawk last winter. I see those every once in a while, twice I've seen one eating grouse. There is one stretch of road by the woodlot, maybe 150 yards long,  where if you're going to see a grouse, that is the spot. Those goshawk have had it figured out to. It's amazing to me.

I guess that's why they call them "wise old owls" because they look like they have a lot to say but just don't want to bother saying it.

YellowHammerisms:

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

My science teacher back in high school said if you want to try calling an owl, the hoot pattern should be like: "Who cooks for you?".

I have heard that before and it isn't too hard to get them to call back!

Turkey Hunters say, "Who Cooks for You", "Who Cooks for You", "Who Cooks for You All".

Coal miners in West Virginia get pretty good at natural owl hooting. They signal one another in the mines by owl hoots.

And Gomer Pyle too.
We had one client who sent me a picture of a "snowy owl" in their neighborhood. They lived just over the mountain :huh? . I looked at the pic, barred owl. There's been as many as 4 in the shop on the beams watching me work down below. They are not shy  ffcheesy

Any I've seen are not afraid of your presence, just like Jeff's owls. Lucky to have 3. I've seen them as pairs though. Awesome! ffsmiley ffcool

Don's always got a 'one better' story, don't he, Jeff? I'm beginning to wonder. Hahaha

I was hungry for a smoothie, so I went and made one a bit ago. I stepped out on the screened porch, which faces the western sky, and the bats were just baling out of their roost in the barn eve. The sun had just set, the sky was not dark to the west. As the bats flew above the trees I could see them well. One better watch out around here or get eaten alive. ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy

When I was doing wildlife control work I got called to a house in the wee hours to get a bat from the living area. Got the bat easily, then went to do a quick check of the attic. There were a bunch up there, all vocal and upset. I told the homeowner that I would come back soon and offer a solution. As I was going to my pickup, I shined a light up on the house where all the bats were. Sitting there on the roof was an Eastern Screech-Owl. Apparantly the bats were upset and did not want to run the gauntlet past the owl, who thought that it was a snack vending machine.
