I have been considering taking some time to do some sawing in the disaster area.
The idea would be to help churches, etc. by supplying material from the downed trees
for timber-framed shelter, or to just help create a stockpile for  them to build with later.
Everybody knows there will be a spike in lumber prices, so why not help out?

Any suggestions.  Any contacts?

(I would be using a 10" Peterson Winch Production Frame.   I could handle
up to 60" diameter and up to 46 ft. length.)

I think that's a really fine idea, Phil. :) :)  I'm sure there are lots of uninsured barns and other outbuildings that could be rebuilt with some of the downed timber.  You might try contacting one of your local Baptist or Methodist pastors who might put you in contact with a church out there.

I didn't know you had gotten a Peterson.  Congratulations! 8) 8)

Good idea....  If we could get enough logs waiting in one place I think the FF members in the area could step up.  I could anyway.   How about AL?

Thanks for the replies, guys!   The link Cosmo posted was especially useful.

If anyone knows of people to contact, by name.    Alabama,  Miss., Louisiana, etc.
It would be great to link up with people a)who already had projects in mind'
and b) had partners ready to keep the logs flowing and the wood stickered.

(After hours I might want to whittle on some large hardwood; just to get a
few souvenirs to take back.)

You might even contact Woodmizer. The have a program going to help Woodmizer owners. They might also be able to get you in contact with someone that could give you some guidance.

There is tremendous opportunity in the Gulf States to make good out of a disaster.

Keep checking the Wood-Mizer web site for new details.  I've been exchanging e-mail with Deanna of WM on this subject.  I know Wood-Mizer is sending all kinds of help down there.  But there is not a lot of information coming back.  She's going to see to getting and posting pictures and stories about the cleanup of down timber and the efforts to use the lumber to build home and churches, etc.

The link I posted contains additional web addresses for sawmill manufacturers that are coordinating sawyers and trees.  Good luck to all that go and help out.

I worked in South Carolina during the Hurricane Hugo cleanup and that was some hard work in gathering up downed timber.  BE CAREFUL if you are cutting blown over timber from the stump.  I had some of my guys have close calls when cutting a stump off of a blown-over tree.
