This is a test, which tooth needs more filing?

I would say the one on the right because of the witness marks.
But you're not off by much.
My eyesight is not the best right now,but looks like the top edge is off just a little bit and I do mean a little.
I only have one witness marks on my chain. I would be off on some of my sharpening if I had all those marks,
But I was never good at tests in school.  :uhoh:

the leading edge of the one on the left, looks rounded.  I will go with both.

If the question is which one looks duller, left
I can change my profile okay. No errors. If you can,t remove all the extra info in other fields and try.

The one on the right has the angle off a bit and I would fix that first. The one on the left is longer, but that shouldn't matter, however, for some reason it does look a little dull, I can't can't say why from this angle.

"More filing" the right.  "Most needs filing" the left.  Cut straight and even both.

Whichever is dullest.  It really doesn't matter which is longer, (despite what some so-called internet experts say)

Stay on the angles and sharpen to a good edge. Set your depth stops to the specific tooth and cut wood.

Jeff

I strive for sharp, I'd waste a lot of time and chain striving for even.

never ever count of those marks on top of the tooth to be correct and the same

booman

ehp, I agree but this is a prototype, I put the marks there.

Thanks for all the input.  Some of us have been sharpening chains for 40 years and more and have no problem with it.  I have too but I still wind up with the teeth on one side longer than the other side.   I think some of you would admit to that also.  This could certainly help out a newbie with being able to tell at a glance if all the teeth are uniformly sharpened, not that they have to be exactly on the mark.

In your picture, it is hard for me to tell the number of marks there are on each tooth, so I don't think it would help me "at a glance" as I still have to try and count the marks.

It is easy to get off side to side when hand filing. My filing stroke is just stronger doing the left side teeth than the right side. I compensate by just doing an extra stroke on the right side.

At this point 4, but did the picture not turn out clear?

The picture is clear, but with the multiple closely spaced lines it is hard for my eyes to differentiate the number.

My Stihl grinder is good at keeping the same.

I would like to hear from you younger guys just starting out that still have good eyesight, don't have a grinder and are struggling to learn to hand file.

I'm not young, nor have the best eye sight, but as far as struggling to learn hand filing and not owning a grinder, then I can add this.  Practice is the best solution for struggling to get the angles correct.  That line on the top is only one angle.

Jeff

I used to consider myself to be more than pretty good when filing or grinding and filing and upkeep on the teeth on a circle saw sawmill, but when it comes to filing a chainsaw, I'm a complete failure.

Not clear what you are up to, or what the initial post means or is getting at.
I get the impression you are trying to get us to say something that justifies your new approach, which may involve intent to patent an idea.

I see lines on the tops of your two teeth, and you say you put them there.
My Stihl chains come with such witness marks and I think they are at 35 deg, but I like to file @ 30 deg. Just use the lines to keep track.

Not asking you to disclose what you don't want to disclose. And I'm not one of the younger guys like MM.  ffcheesy ffcheesy ffcheesy

Just read your other thread, so may explain your intention.

beenthere and others, I have filed a provisional, patent pending, on this idea.  It is something I have thought about every time I sharpen a chain.  Until I finally made a prototype and started using it,  I didnt realize how good it works.  Yes each tooth comes with a witness mark, but it is too far away to keep the teeth uniform.  With this setup, you are always close to a mark and it is very easy to keep all teeth uniform.  I thought I could present this to this forum since we are all brothers of the sawdust and maybe get some extra input.

Jeff, am I breaking any forum rules?

So the "breakthrough" is adding a witness mark?

Or rather, additional witnesses marks?
