He was a fantastic actor,  The French Connection is still one of my favorite Movies

He had a great career and great range as an actor.  I watched Get Shorty just the other day.   He was a deceptively prolific actor and did many more movies than I recalled.

The circumstances surrounding his and his wife's deaths are a bit unusual.   Maybe CO poisoning since the dog was found dead too?

Yeah, CO was the first thing I thought too, he made it to 95. Like you say prolific, they just ran clips from a few of the many movies he did, a career that spanned many decades. He was very good at what he did, and got lots of star roles because of it.

I just read there were not indications of CO but the front door was open.  Two other dogs were alive in the home.  His wife may have been dead longer.  Hackman was found in the mud room apparently where he took a fall.

I liked Gene a lot, I don't know all his movies but I'm with Ted, Get Shorty is incredible and his role as a cigarette company owner in the movie Heartbreakers is really good, it's a movie about conwomen and he is very funny in it.

I think my favorite would be "Hoosiers", very well played along side the late Dennis Hopper. Very much a great team movie right up there with "Rudy".

I think I mentioned before but if I ever get Bill up near Charleston to teach me to use a router I'm going to make a sign and hang on my last storage shed (Remember the one the design committee was so "helpful" in getting me to put in floating floors and vertical storage and such a year or so back) and the sign is going to say "Ode to Little Bill" after Gene's carpenter skills as Little Bill, the sheriff in Unforgiven.

I think he was a great actor and hate to see us all lose him.

He was a prolific actor and had a movie out almost every year from the 60's to the early 2000's. Some of his movies are more obscure and rarely mentioned. Some of his movies were remade by others. I bet no one heard of 'Scarecrow' , 'Marooned', 'Night Moves' or 'Prime Cut'. I just watched his 2001 movie, 'The Heist' , with Danny DeVito, lots of deception to the end. And 'Unforgiven' was one of my favorite Eastwood westerns with Hackman. 'The Quick and the Dead' was a great western to, with Sharon Stone and Hackman. 'The Firm' with Wilford Brimley, Tom Cruise and Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook and Hackman was excellent to.

In addition to being a great actor, he served his country as a Marine. :usa:

Was that the Prime Cut with Lee Marvin?

Lets not forget one of his first movies, Bonny and Clyde.

He did another movie I heard Robert Osborne, host of Turner Classic Movies refer to as a "tour de force" for Hackman.  It is called "The Conversation."  Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, it features a young Harrison Ford, Robert Duval, Teri Garr, Penny Williams and John Cazale, plus a few other faces you will recognize.

The first time I heard of The Conversation was probably 20 years ago on TCM.

I'm really curious to find out what happened.  For it to be him and his wife and one of his 3 dogs, is really strange.  You'd think CO, but why did the other two dogs live?  If one killed the other, then why the dog?  If an intruder, why no marks or outward signs?  If poisoning, why the dog?  CO is seeming most likely, but very curios case.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!

he appeared to have fallen and had a poss. head injury.  there was mention of pills.  they have said no evidence of a break-in, and no evidence of CO.  Autopsy should help answer the question.  they can measure CO and do toxicology studies.  We will have to wait.

When I heard reports of pills spilled on the countertop and the one dog, I figured the dog found one or more pills that fell to the floor and curled up in the closet.

Very strange circumstances.

Did you know actor Eddie Egan, was the real life NYCP cop that Hackman's character (Popeye Doyle) in French Connection was based on? He also starred in 'Prime Cut' again with Gene Hackman.

So sad to hear Hackman died of heart disease and had advanced Alzheimer's disease.  He may not have known his wife had already died days before.

She died of hantavirus pulmonary failure, a disease contracted by contact with rodent waste.

Apparently, they were ill but neighbors and family had no idea how so.

Go check on the old people, folks!

Yep, but he lived a long productive life.

I just watched another of his movies from the 70's, and I think it was a made for TV movie. It also starred Matt Dillion. 'Target' released around 1986.
