I recently purchased a portable sawmill powered by a 20 HP Honda 2 cyl gasoline engine.  I placed an order for an hour meter/tachometer to keep track of running time for maintenance purposes.  When I received the meter which just has an induction pick-up wrapped around the spark plug cable, is stated on the package that it was for one or two cylinder engines without an oil filter.  Does anyone have any idea what the presence of an oil filter would have to do with the applicability of an induction hour meter?  I am quite puzzled by this.

Does it also say "made in Tiewan" (sp)? aside from the quality issue, the translators they hire may be fresh out of school(or off the street)??
The one I bought for my Norwood just hooks to any keyed power source. One ground wire, one wire to a keyed power source. It don't get much easier than that!

I'd have to guess that it is made for a 2-stroke engine that fires once per revolution.  The presence of an oil filter would mean that the engine is a 4 stroke and usually they fire once per two revolutions.  If the reading you get on the tachometer is really low, then that is the case.

My 20hp briggs has no oil filter,  but I have never mixed oil with the gas. ;)

Some of the small 4 cycle engines that have the mag in the flywheel, spark every revolution.

I have a twin cylnder 18 hp onan with an oil filter that fires on ever revolution. So in essance it would be doubling what the actual reading should be. That may be what it is referng to. Bad way to describe it if that is the case.
