I was watching and lusting after my BIL's PTO winch. I really can not justify one and my tractor is too small anyway. When he was finnished he was using the blade of the winch to smooth out the ground where he had been working and I realized that I already had that part of the winch. So I went home and mounted a electric winch on my scrap blade and it has worked out amazing well. I have snatched some logs out of the woods that have surprised me. A little slow but it works.

That looks like a clever add-on. Sure a good way to 'hold' against the pull of the winch. Keep us posted how it continues to work out.

Very good idea to hang the winch on a blade! Thank You KGNC!  8)

After the storm here one year ago, there still are one or two trees here and there in the woods. I´m thinking about hanging a much biger and faster PTO-driven winch on a tractor and pull them trees out to a road.

Another way to go is an engine and winch bolted on a trailer hooked to my car.

The reason to haul the trees with a winch is I want the job done faster than with a tractor+crane+logtrailer that also would cost me more to buy.
Want the winch to take whole trees or cut in two logs if they are big. Want to haul them as fast as I can walk, or faster. Think this can be done with  Domänsaxen at the end of a wire 5/8" or more.

But I´ve never pulled a Domänsaxen + 6-800' 5/8" wire out in the woods.
What do you think, how long 5/8" wire can a man pull out?

Now that's one of the best idas I've seen in a long time for making a 3PH winch.  I'm sure you will refine it as time goes on.

Thanks for sharing that.   8)

I have no idea what a Domansaxen is?But Trying to use 6-800 feet of wire rope out in the woods is just about impossible.I have 100 feet on my winch and a few times have used almost all of it.But I had to unhook a couple times. It's real hard to try to walk in a straight line out in the woods.Them trees have a way of growing in the wrong places.I did not want to bark up my trees.

This is Domänsaxen. I used it as a teenager hooked to a horse. The chain is fastened to one side, sliding through a ring in the other side and through the center when the horse (or winch) pull the hook with a T-handle. Should be easier to understand if the chain/hook was placed to the right on the picture.
Can´t remember the logs ever hooked into the ground or pulled the bark off a tree. The bows lifted the end some and also allowed the log to roll. I DO remember I had to jump a lot. Hauling long logs I couldn´t walk behind them. The back end of a log comes fast against your legs when turned around a tree too early!  :o :o :D
Hauling logs smaller than 8" I used to open Domänsaxen and puch 2-4 logs into it in front of the chain.

You can still buy Domänsaxen at www.skogma.de

Swede,

If I was to find one of those around here I would have sworn it was a demented bear trap.  That sure looks wicked but it looks dandy for the job.

Swede, that's where a horse trained to take verbal commands is a big help.   ;D

It sure is a whole lot safer hollering "Gee, Gee" from the other side of the tree than getting caught between the tree and the log.  ;)

An old feller saw his nieghbor twitchin out a log with a mule and he was jumpin back an forth accross the log.He said ''why don't ya learn that mule gee an haw an ya won't have to hold them lines"?
The ol logger said"He knows gee an haw but he kicked me two year ago and I ain't spoke to em since."

a BEAR TRAP? :o

farmerdoug; I´ll rather put a full dozen logs in a Domänsaxen than one single bear! ;D .......and take them loose.
Had that picture on a contact site before I met Annika and then called it my women trap. We met IRL before she saw that picture. Perhaps it´s easier to get a bear into it.

Murph; Thats right. I´ve also seen an old man walking in front of his horse but thats not common here. Usaly a horse is trained to move only when you´re holding the rein and NEVER when it´s on the ground.

SAW MILLER;  :D Thats a good one!

Swede, ours are trained to verbal commands, that way if the riends and the person aren't in the same place the horse is still under the direction of the handler.

They won't pull on the traces until they're told to, and will even lean forward just to tighten the bight on command.

We do a lot of custom work, like utility pole work, and not having to hold the lines makes life a whole bunch easier.

I think the horses actually like it alot more too. They have many commands in their vocabulary and are very relaxed because they understand better what is happening and what is expected (and not) of them.

We have one old gelding who I think understands English better than some of the people on the jobs.  :D

He might be a titch smarter too.  ;)

I know old timers around here used to have someone in the woods and someone at he landing.  The horse would be hooked to a log and unhooked when she got to the landing.

This one has a PTO winch!

It can also be moved from one side to the other by hydraulic.
